John Callaghan b 1826 Co Cavan
Owen (John) Callaghan was born about 1826 Lurgan Co Cavan. His parents were John Callaghan and Margaret Galligan.
John married Brigid Bradyabout 1849/50 in Lurgan Co Cavan. Brigid's parents were Matthew Brady and Mary Smythe. (I have found Brigid's baptism along with her siblings) The Brady family were flax growers in Cavan and tenants of Lord Farnham.
John and Brigidhad 5 children born in Ireland; Matthew b 1850; Margaret b 1851; John James b 1854 (my g.grandfather); Mary Anne b 1857 and Susan b 1859.
The family emigrated to Australia in 1859 and settled in Victoria. On the shipping documents, John was then known as 'Owen', but from that point onwards, he called himself John Callaghan; sometimes, O'Callaghan.
All John and Brigid's Australian documents state they were born, married and their children born in Co Cavan.I cannot find any trace of them in Ireland (other than Brigid's baptism). The family were/are Catholic which makes research that much harder.
There isa John Calahan in the Parish of Denn. This John Calahan is from Cornagrow and in 1821 census, 1828 Tithe and 1856 Griffiths documents. I do not know how to find a marriage for this John Calahan (who may or may not be 'my' gggrandfather). I amlooking at this person because he also was a tenant of Lord Farnham, however, there may not be any connection with my family, just a coincidence.
Once in Australia, John and Brigid had another 7 children and they were amongst the first settlers in Meredith and Wycheproof, Victoria.
I would no doubt have (O)Callaghan relations in Cavan and would be thrilled to make contact.
If any of the information above sounds family, please contact me. I have a tree on ancestry.com but I think I may be the only (O)Callaghan researching this family! I have researched the family extensively in Australia.
Cheers
