Owen Gilligan

Kilmore (Cavan)

Looking for information about Owen Gilligan (born about 1831) and imigrated to New York City.  Married Mary Cumin and had at least five children: Eugene (my ggrandfather)(b. 1860 in Bellananagh), Joseph (1862), Michael, Mary Anne, and Margaret.  Trying to verify these are my ancestors as names match are known ancestors. - Fred GIlligan

Fred:

The RC baptismal records for Kilmore parish start in 1859 so if Owen was from Kilmore, a baptismal record would not be available. Marriage records start in 1827. I'm not clear from your message when Owen left for NYC. Did he marry in NYC? You list Eugene as born in 1860 in Bellananagh but I was not able to locate a record.

Can you clarify where the marriage and baptismal events occurred Ireland or NYC? Thanks!

There is confusion here.  One possible source states:

I listed the wife's name incorrrectly.  It is Mary Cronin.  Mary (nee Cumin/Cumeen) is the wife of his son, Eugene.

Possibly came to NYC on 20 March 1851. Name on ship manifest adjacent to a Michael Flynn. (roll 096, M237, 1820-1897).  Ship was Columbiana. Left Liverpool.  Occupation stated as laborer.   Manifest lists him and his children, but his wife is not listed.

Came to USA again in March 1873 after death of his wife Mary in 1872 in Kilcogy. Departed Liverpool England and Queenstown, Ireland. Roll 374, M237 (1820-1897) (Sharon Gilligan family tree)

I have data of an possible Owen Gilligan in the Sligo area, but my DNA results are all leading to this area.

Thaks for the help.  My cousin and I have been trying to solve this for years.

Fred:

I think Owen went to NYC alone and married Mary Cronin in the States. Cronin was a very common surname in Ireland in the 19th century and almost exclusively a Cork/Kerry surname although there were a few Cronins in Co. Cavan in the early 1850s when the Griffiths Valuation survey was conducted. This link here takes you to a database that one of our volunteers (Shane Wilson) developed which shows where surnames were found in Ireland by county. Gilligan was mainly found in Sligo/Roscommon/Offaly/Galway and not one Gilligan was listed in the Griffiths for Co. Cavan.

I went back to Roots Ireland but still could not find the baptismal record for Eugene in 1860 using Cronin as the mother's surname.

I also looked for the civil death record of Mary Gilligan in 1872 in Cavan on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie but was unsuccessful. If you have the record could you share?

Let me know if you have any questions.

Roger,

Thanks for your assistance.  Clearly I need to do some more research for information.

My Owen is Owen Fitzpatrick.  Born in Glangevlin, Caven circa 1841,  He died in Ireland May 19, 1919.

He married Bridget Dolan in 1867 in Glangevlin. She was born circa 1849 also born in Glangevlin.

If anyone has info I would so appreciate it!  Thanks

Renee

Update to Owen.  His actual name is Galligan when he arrived in NYC in 1873.  The family moved to New Haven Connecticut to settle. He was married to Mary Cronin who died in childbirth with Margaret.  Owen and Mary Ann are twins and were born in 1865.  I was just visiting Cavan and viewed his farm (found with Griffith's) in Corlislea with distant Irish cousin Sean Galligan.  For some reason, the name was changed by Eugene to GIlligan on his marriage certificate for himself and Owen.

Hi,

I'm sorry I haven't seen this sooner! I just got an email re: this message. I don't think this is the same family. I'll tell you a bit about mine.

Owen Fitzpatrick 1841 - 1919 born in Glangevlin, Cavan, Ireland married Bridget Dolan 1849 - 1871 born in Glangevlin, Cavan, Ireland

They married 15 Feb 1867 • Glangevlin Parish, Cavan, Ireland I copied and pasted, so I guess that's why it's highlighted.

Bridget died in Doonmakeever, Glangevlin, Cavan, Ireland It just says that Owen died in Cavan, Ireland

Bridget and Owen had seven children, that I know of. My great grandfather Terence Fitzpatrick was born in 1880 in Ireland and died in 1945 in Jersey City NJ. He arrived in the US in 1881. He married Helen Jennings 1888 - 1947, she was born in Jersey City NJ.

Then they had my grandfather Terence Fitzpatrick in the US in 1908. (as an aside he had Terence Fitzpatrick b. 1937, who had my brother Terence Fitzpatrick in 1962)!!! I hope I gave enough information to distinguish this family from others because everyone has the same name.

Also, the Cronin side is from my grandmother Anna Morey. Her mother was Elizabeth Cronin. Anna married Terence Fitzpatrick (my grandfather) Hence the Fitzpatrick/Cronin -Morey connection.

Any info would be appreciated!!

Renee

He married Helen Jennings
