townland in Borris, County Carlow

Carlow

I'm researching the Foley family from Borris, County Carlow. I have found some baptisms and their address seems to be Bormona or Barmona or something similar.

Can anyone tell me exactly where that is please?

Which parish and dates where these baptisms?

See below for a list of townlands in Co. Carlow matching a wildcard search using 'b*r*m*' as the search

Many townland names are Anglicized version of their original names in Irish and have lots of spelling variants...

There are no baronies, civil parishes or villages in Carlow that could fit. One other possibility is a local name..

Bahanna ?

Borris Catholic parish included parts of a list of civil parishes - Ballyellin, Clonygoose, Kiltennel, Sliguff, St. Mullin's and Ullard.

The townland that agha mentioned, 'Bahanna', is in St. Mullin's so could fit with a Borris RC baptism

There are two townlands in Carlow called GORMONA. I don't think either is in Borris, but one of them is just a few miles from it. Could Gormona be the one you are looking for?

  • Gormona (Garmanach) , Lorum Civil Parish, Barony of Idrone East, Co. Carlow 100 A, 0 R, 29 P

  • Gormona (Garmanach) , Dunleckny Civil Parish, Barony of Idrone East, Co. Carlow 257 A, 3 R, 13 P

Gormana townland baptisms would be parish of Bagenalstown/Dunleckney normally.

Could it be Ballinamona ?

Was it the baptism's of the family of James Foley and Catherine Flood you were looking at in the Borris register ?

Mary Foley in 1813 looks like address is Borris.

Not convinced it is Ballinamona in the other baptismal entry's but its possible.

Thank you everyone, you've been hard at work while I've been sleeping.

I have found some baptisms in the Kildare and Leighlin Diocese, Parish Borris and have attached one baptism and one marriage image taken from the film.

And a marriage in the Kildare and Leighlin Diocese, Parish St. Mullins, but that marriage doesn't give a place, just the names.

Presume the marriage entry is that of James Foley of B (?) to Ellen Gormley (?) 3rd March 1835 ?

Looking at the Borris register is very difficult to decipher it with any certainty. Bahanna would be St. Mullins parish I think although not certain. The way it reads it looks like James Foley is from B(?) which might make sense if he was married in Borris but resided in another parish although its usually the female's address that's given.

Couldnt find the baptism in the screenshot (Mary to James Foley and Judy Doyle ?)

Looking at the list of Carlow townlands nothing jumps out.

Looking at Griffiths Valuation see James Foley x 2 in Gowlin (Goolin) townland which is St. Mullins, another in Aghabeg (Dunleckney parish and family is still there ), also in Knockroe which is, I think, Borris parish.

Could it be this village named 'Barmona' ?

It's shown on the c1840s OS maps as a very small village located close to the town of Borris, about 1.5 km (~1 mile) south east, and in the townland of Kilcoltrim.

(src: Ordnance Survey Ireland / Geohive)

On the 1st edition map (c1840) approximately 13 buildings are indicated in the village, by the late 1800s only about 7, modern aerial maps show about 3 farms - houses and sheds/barns etc.

Shane, I think you've found it, thank you very much. I've just now looked at the newspapers on FindMyPast, and I have found a reference to a Foley at Barmona. So I'd say you're right.

And thank you to agha too for your help. That baptism you couldn't find was on 15th March 1835. I originally found that on Roots Ireland and then clicked on the link to the image.

I do have another question, that marriage I found for the Parish of St. Mullins, is that a church named St. Mullins or the town?

I really appreciate all the help.

St. Mullin's is the name of a village and the parish - both civil and Catholic, most of the parish is in Co. Carlow but some parts are in Co.Wexford.

In the 1830s the Catholic parish of St. Mullin's had several chapels, including one possibly shared with Borris parish at Ballymurphy townland not far from Barmona (c4km). The c1900s map show it as being dedicated to St. Patrick, there's still a church at the same location, built 1840s

The other chapels were further south in the county at Glynn and Drummin.
