Searching for Fleming Family Possibly from County Carlow

Carlow

Hello,

I am searching for my Irish "Fleming" Family.

My great-great grandfather, James Fleming, was born in Ireland in about 1818 and emigrated to Canada sometime before1847. His parents were James Fleming and Mary Ann Wilson. He also had a sister named Margarite Fleming born in 1823, who also emigrated to Canada. Orally, family members have told me that he and his parents were from County Carlow and that they were not a Catholic. Despite my efforts in searching, I have been unable to find any evidence that they were indeed from County Carlow.

I am wondering if anyone might have any information on Fleming families that might fit this vague description and/or be able to point me in a direction that might help me find some evidence.

Many, many thanks in advance.

Mary Johnston (nee Fleming)

Mary:

I looked on the Tithe listings for Co. Carlow and found one record for a James Fleming. No way to know if this 1834 record is for your ancestor but this James was leasing 8 acres in the townland of Marley in the civil parish of St. Mullin's. https://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004625716/004625716_00360.pdf

Finding Church of Ireland records in the early 19th century is difficult. Many of the older C Of I parish records were destroyed in the 1922 Public Records Office fire in Dublin.

This link has the status of all C of I parish records but I do not see St. Mullin's parish listed unless the records are under a different name. https://www.churchofireland.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/registers/ParishRegisters/PARISHREGISTERS.pdf

You may want to consider a DNA test. Possibly you will have matches with someone who also has Fleing/Wilson ancestors.

Unfortunately 'Irish Records' (James G. Ryan) lists St. Mullins Church of Ireland historic records as 'lost', an early edition of John Grenham's 'Tracing your Irish Ancestors' lists various Co. Carlow CofI parishes but makes no mention of any surviving historic registers for St. Mullins.

Many thanks to both Roger McDonnell and Shane Wilson for your time, recommendations and information shared. It is much appreciated!
