Looking for Carrahers

Carlow

Hi,

I am a direct descendant of James Carraher, post master in Carlow.  He was married to Barbara and they had 2 sons, Joseph, (1835) and Samuel James (circa 1840). James died in Carlow in 1850, aged 54. His widow and son were still living in Carlow in 1853, in Burrin Street, as evidenced by Barbara recorded there in the Allotment and Tithe Book and she and her sons each recorded as witnesses to a number of marriages in the parish. Barbara and Samuel emigrated to Liverpool at some point in the 1850s, they are recorded on the 1861 census as living in central Liverpool, using the name McCarraher. Samuel worked as a bootmaker and then a post master in Rock Ferry, Birkenhead until the late 1890s.  He was a Mason.

I am trying to find out anything else about the Carraher family in Ireland eg where James came from, Barbara's maiden name, what became of Joseph, why they left for Liverpool etc etc.  Any suggestions extremely welcome!  Thank you.

Grannymac,

A clue to Barbara's maiden name might be found in the marriages she witnessed.  Witnesses were often siblings or other close relatives.  So look at the surname of the bride (and also groom) and then search for the baptism of a Barbara with that surname.

If you want to post the marriages here, I will search the records for you.

Patricia,

Thanks so much for the details re Joseph's birth, which I had found earlier, but. like you, I have not found any other birth records for the family yet.

Thanks also for offering to look at the records - very kind of you.  So I've attached record files of some of the many marriages that Barbara, James and Joseph witnessed in Carlow.

I also found a January 1850 Carlow burial record for a Ruth Carraher, who died at the age of 26.

Hope you find something!

Baptism of Samuel James Carahar 10th January 1841, also at Tullow Church of Ireland Parish Co. Carlow (from irishgenealogy.ie)

Link to register image , which notes that Samuel was born 28th November 1840

I dont see James listed as post-master in Directory listings for 1840s / early '50s (Slater's, Thom's, Pettigrew & Oulton &c) - the postmaster for Tullow is shown as William Nourse in 1846 to 1850 and Francis Moore in 1852, and for Carlow town a William. Henderson Carey.for the same years - maybe your James was postmaster in earlier years ?.

Many thanks Shane.

James is recorded as having been a Postmaster on Samuel's marriage certificate, but as to when and where I don't yet know!  His widow Barbara is shown as living in Burrin Street in 1853, where the Carlow post office was situated, which might, or might not, be a coincidence!

I will continue the hunt for James and Barbara's marriage record.
