Much family research has takenme to the Tinryland, Ballybar Lower region of Carlow and I would really appreciate some help.

My Great Grandmother, Jane (Johanna) Herons or Heanrs, born Ballybar 4 May 1871 andbaptised Tinryland 7 May 1871,diedKildare11 Dec 1942.

Her parent were Patrick (Patritius) Hearnabt 1841 - ?? from Carlow and Maria Anna Nugentfrom Tinryland, they were married 20 Sep 1868 at Tinryland.

Jane also had a sister, Maria Anna born Ballybar 4 Aug 1869, baptised Tinryland 8 Aug 1869.

Kevin:

I looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Clonmelsh parish and there was a James Hearne in Ballybar Lower townland. Possibly he was the father of Patrick.

I also located a civil death index record for a Patrick Hearns in the Carlow registration district. The year of birth provided by the informant was close to your 1841.

First name(s) Patrick
Last name Hearns
Birth year 1843
Age at death 42
Registered year 1885
Registered quarter/year Oct - Dec 1885
Registration district Carlow
Volume 3

I also located the likely 1901 and 1911 census records for Patrick's wife. For some reason, they transcribed her surname as Heather in the 1911 census even though Hearns is shown on the return.

This may be the civil death index record for Mary Hearns.

Thanks Roger for those leads, they're hepling a lot. As I've been researching the Irish side of the family for just a short time so it's good reliable reference sites.

It looks as though the family name was spelt, by various people, many ways; Herons, Hearns, Hearnes and Hearn. Probably, each preist or registrar would spell the name the way it sounded or the way he thought it should be spelt. Consequently, as there were a few Herne families in the Tinryland / Ballybar region, It's taking a while to sort out who goes with which family.

i.e. When Patrick was married his name was recorded as 'Hearns or Heron'. His brother Michael's name was also recorded in the same manner, when he was married.

The Patrick Hearns you found for me died in 1885 while the man I'm looking for appears in the 1911 census, aged 60. Nevertheless, Tinryland is/was not a big town and there were quite a few Hearns living there so It's likely that they were all related and I'll soon be able make some links.

Kevin:

The 1911 census for Mary Hearns lists her as a widow. Do I have the wrong Mary?

Hi Roger,

The next file is the marriage of Jane's parents; Patrick (Patritius) Hearns or Herons and Maria Anna Nugent also showing their parents.

That is something I've never seen before: using two family names. The same two names (Hearns or Herons) were used when Patrick's brother Michael was married.
