Mary Connor & Robert Bryan

CarlowCloydagh civil parish (Carlow)

I am researching the origins of the GG grandparents of my niece and nephew - they were  Robert Bryan (born c. 1842-1846) and Mary Connor (born  c.1845).  They apparently married in the Parish Church, Cloydagh on 12 Jan 1872 and appear to have had five children in Carlow before emigrating here to Australia in 1884. At the time of their marriage, Mary is shown as living in Clogrennane.

In 1872 they appear to have lived in Castle St, Carlow, according to the baptism of their first child, while later ones show them living at Centure (Centaue ?) S, Killeshin.

 

I am trying to disocver some of the background of both Robert and mary before their marriage,  Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Below is the civil marriage index record for Robert and Mary. You can get a copy of the record from the GRO at the link below. The record will shows the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1872. A copy costs around 4 euros. Go to the link below. Hit marriage certifcate in English. A screen will pop up asking for a User Name and Password. Hit Cancel and the form will appear. Fill out the form, ask for a copy and also provide the year of marriage, registration district ( Carlow) and the volume and page number ( 8 and 355). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy to you.

you will find that Centaur Street is in Carlow Town, beside Saint Mary's Church of Ireland, which could mean that the child was baptised there.

Further research indicates that the first three children, Annie,  Frances and Josephine were baptised in the parish church, Killeshin.  Is this in the vicinity?  The fourth and fifth children, William and Ida were also baptised in a parish church but it just shows the birthplaces as Carlow and does not identify the baptism place. The sixth child, Abner,  was born afte they arived in Australia in 1884.

Killeshin civil parish is in Co. Laois (formerly Queens Co.). The parish borders Cloydagh civil parish in Co. Carlow. So it is in the vicinty.

That was a quick reply indeed and thank you Roger... I went to have breakfast and when I came back, there it was. . It's amazing to be sitting here on a hot, sunny steamy morning in Queensland, Australia, and able to get a reply from what appears to be a decidedly cooler and fresher Ireland within minutes. :)

So Tony said that Centaur Street was in Carlow Town and their marriage record says "Centure/Centaur St, Killeshin".  How does that work out...are they one and the same?  Mary's place of residence at the time was Clogrennane so where is that in the picture?

I actually live near Baltimore, Maryland in the States. It is 7:30 P.M. Eastern time here and 37 degrees Fahrenheit. Tony is probably asleep unless he is a night owl. He will need to specifically answer your questions. From Google Maps, Killeshin is to the west of Carlow Town right across the River Barrow. Clogrennane is to the southwest of Killeshin a few miles.

Thanks Roger......... I'll wait to see what Tony comes up with but 'm guesing that time zone aside, your weather would be more like Ireland's than ours at the moment.  We have just come back in from shopping and it is 27 degrees Celsius outside which is apparently a little over 80 Fahrenheit.

We get so used to wide distances between places here in Australia that I tend to forget that many of the towns/areas in Ireland, although close by our standards, are distant in respect of genealogy research. Therfore all of those places that have come up in tracking Robert and Mary's background sound as though they could not be linked but most likely are, if that makes sense.
