Carty/McCartys of Carrarea, Tullow, County Carlow, Clonmore Parish

Hello: My ancestors John Carty (born Carrarea, 12 Mar 1826; parents Pat Carty and Jane Keough; Catholic) and Elizabeth Wilson (Ballyduff, neighboring farm, born Feb 1831, Protestant) immigrated to New York City around 1854. They left behind a daughter, Jane (b. 8 April 1852) who eventually went to NYC too.

I have record of John Carty's birth but do NOT have a record of Elizabeth Wilson's. I believe her parents' names were Edward and Frances. I also do NOT have any record of their marriage. Can someone help me find these records?

Hi Claire!

Elizabeth presumably was baptized in the Church of Ireland Parish for Clonmore. Records for that parish before 1882 were destroyed in the 1922 Public Records Office fire in Dublin. The same issue would have impacted the baptismal record for Jane

The marriage likely occurred in the same parish and no record would be available. However, civil marriage records for non Catholics should have been registered starting in 1845. I searched the free site irishgenealogy.ie and did not find a record so maybe they did not register because it was a mixed marriage.

I did find Jane's Baptism record in the Clonmore Catholic Church records - her mother was listed as Jane Wilson. Dates and father, John Carty, match up to what I know.

Is it odd that they would have married outside of the church but have Jane baptised in the church?

I guess the marriage and Elizabeth's baptism records will not be found!
