Missing Parish Records? Upper Creggan 1829-1845

ArmaghCreggan (Armagh)

I have noticed on the NLI Catholic Parish Registers website that there is a gap in the Upper Creggan baptisms and marrieage for the period between 1829 and 1845. I am aware that a small number of transcribed baptisms from this period appear on the RootsIreland website. At a guess I would say that the registers were damaged and/or too fragile to film. Can anyone confirm if this isthe case and if there is any other source for these missing baptisms and marriage or if they are likely to be filmed at a time on the future? Thanks, Jenny [Australia]

Lintywhite,

The PRONI guide to RC church records suggests that there are no records for the missing years. They are probably lost rather than illegible or fragile.  I have noticed that the illegible ones were still sometimes filmed even though there seems little point. They did also usually manage to film the fragile ones (on the basis they won’t be disturbed again). This is what PRONI says exists:

Upper Creggan (Crossmaglen) (Armagh diocese) Baptisms and marriages, 1796-1803, 1812-29 and 1845-81.

It’s possible that a few loose pages from the missing period were found but I doubt the whole volume exists. The parish should hold the originals. You could contact the parish office to see what they can tell you.

Thank you Elwyn. I appreciate your help. I will try the parish church.
