Looking for decedents of Hugh and Julia Magilton

Shankill (Antrim)

I have been researching my mother's family.

My mother was the youngest daughter of Hugh and Julia Magilton of Sailortown in Belfast and left in November 1950 when I was 7 months old to reunite with my father in the USA.

I have been trying to find out what my grandmother's life was like after my mother left. Julia died in 1977 so that would be over 25 years.

I visited Belfast May 2025 and was able to visit my grandmother, grandfather, great-grandmother and great-grandfather's graves.

Someone had left flowers on Julia and Hugh's grave. It would be wonderful to know who that might be.

Thanks

Jana

Belfast Telegraph 30 June 1930 has a memorial message: “In fond and loving memory of my dear husband Hugh, accidentally killed on ss Dunmore Head, at Stornoway, on June 30 1926, and was interred in Carnmoney cemetery. “At rest. Days of sadness still come o’er me, hidden tears do often flow, But memories keep you always near me, though you died four years ago”. Still lovingly remembered by his wife and children.

Belfast Telegraph 24.10.1978 has a memorial message:

“Magilton Julia & Hugh - Treasured memories of our loving parents; Julia died October 24 1977; father died June 30 1926; also our dear brother Jimmy died December 16 1976. Always remembered by their loving Family Circle at home and USA. Never from the hearts that loved them will their memories ever fade.”

Numerous messages in the Belfast Telegraph of 26 Oct 1977 re Julia’s death:

Deeply regretted by her loving daughter Jean Atchinson, 5 Innisfayle Pass.

Deeply regretted by her loving daughter and son in law, May & Ed Devine and grandchildren USA

Deeply regretted by her loving daughter and son in law Julia & John Ryan, grandchildren & gt grandchildren USA

Deeply regretted by her loving son and daughter in law Danny & Elizabeth and grandchildren 29 Mount Vernon Drive

Deeply regretted by her loving grandson Bill & Molly Atchinson and gt grandchildren 2 Kilmaine Ave, Bangor

Very deeply regretted by her brother in law and wife John & Mary Magilton 4 Lower Clare Cres Bloomfield.

Grandmother of Elizabeth. Deeply regretted by granddaughter Elizabeth, husband Bill and great grandchildren in Wales.

Deeply regretted by grandson Tom, wife Eileen & family. 143 York Park.

Deeply regretted by her grandson Jim, also her friends Mr & Mrs William Corr and family.

Might be worth checking with PRONI in Belfast to see if Julia left a will. It might name more of the family and provide some leads. (If you can’t get there in person, they’ll copy it for a fee.)
