William Thomas Haslett born 1851 Belfast, Husband of Sarah Ann (Annie) Stanaway

I would love to know the street where William Thomas Haslett’s father John Mitchell Haslett lived so i can visit it next time i visit Ireland.

Hi Caitriona,

If you have access to Ancestry.com (either a subscription or free at a local library), you'll see several Public Member Trees with William on them.  Perhaps if you contact the posters of these trees, one of them would have photos? Good luck!

I see from the various on-line trees that William Thomas’s father died in Londonderry in 1843. There are 4 Samuel Haslett/Hazletts in the 1831 census of that county. Presumably one of them is him.

All were Presbyterian which, in conjunction with a Scottish name, suggests they are descended from Scots who moved to Ireland. MacLysaght (The Surnames of Ireland) says it has been numerous in Ulster since the mid eighteenth century.

Hi Elwyn,

Sorry i have taken so long to reply, I believe the 3rd link is my gggg grandfather, Samuel Haslett/Hazlett living in ship quay street Londonderry, though I’m not sure where his sons are living, since it mentions only one male and 3 females. Though the name Haslett is found in Scotland, i believe it is English in origin and arrived in Northern Ireland in 1600’s, yes Presbyterian.

The will of Samuel Haslett/Hazlett dated 1843 mentions a house on Bishop street and one on Fountain street in Londonderry and a farm known as ‘Foyle view’, do you know how i would go about finding the exact location of these property’s, and if they still exist?

thanks for you help

Caitriona,

Try contacting Brian Mitchell at Derry Genealogy. He’s very good. (He knowns me and you can say I recommended him). He’ll know if there are any maps from that period which might identify the properties.

I looked at Griffiths Valuation for 1858 and I noticed a William Hazlett owned a theatre in Fountain St. Not sure if there is any connection.

Hi Elwyn,

Sorry for my slow reply, thanks so much for the link and the contact. Yes this William Haslett could be Samuel Haslett’s son.

This is really helpful,

all the best
