Thomas Greer Sr, wife Susana Whiteside in Antrim

Antrim

Looking for original wills, baptism, marriage records etc, or other information about them from their time in Ireland. And anything related to their travel to America. They appear to be the first in my family that came to America, so I'm looking for any further information that supports that.

The information I can find is Thomas Greer Sr was born on 21 December 1710, in Antrim, County Antrim, Ireland, his father, James Henry Greer, was 36 and his mother, Mary Vance, was 40. He had at least 3 sons and 1 daughter with Susanna Whiteside. He lived in Cumberland, North Carolina, British Colonial America in 1769 and Bladen, North Carolina, British Colonial America in 1775. He died before April 1783, in Cumberland, Cumberland, North Carolina, United States.

Paul,

There are hundreds of public trees on Ancestry for this family. Some call Thomas "William Thomas."  Some call Susanna by the surname or middle name of Carver. You might want to contact some of the tree owners.

Researching in Ireland in the 1700s is very hard going due to the general lack of records. If you don’t know where they lived it’s a needle in a haystack. Ideally you need to know the person’s exact denomination and the townland or parish they lived in to have any chance of finding them, and even then there may not be any records for that location.

Possibly DNA testing may be a way of matching with others who have additional information about where the family originate. Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. You might want to try them or, if you have already tested, you can transfer your results for no fee.

The North of Ireland Family History Society is running an Ulster DNA project and can offer FTDNA testing kits at a reduced price.  http://www.nifhs.org (Go to DNA project on the website).
