The Mackeys of Greenmount
This message relates to the earlier message that I posted “John Mackey, Antrim and his five children” where I am now reasonably confident through DNA and other documents that I am a descendent of John Mackey who married Martha Robinson and who appear on the “Wallpaper Tree”
Ancestry.co.uk is full of references to the Mackeys at Greenmount most of which give other Ancestry trees as their source so we end up going around in circles. I believe the Mackeys of Greenmount refers to John Mackey who died in 1803, his wife Martha who died in 1802 and their children Thomas born 1746, James 1748, William 1750, Alexander 1752, Isabella 1854, Samuel (of the gravestone) 1756, Skeffington 1758, Bristow 1761, Anna 1764, John 1765 and Eleanor 1767.
I do have the attached letter provided by John McDowel, written sometime between 1965 and 1975 by Edward Douglas Johnson (1897-1975) which contains lots of valuable information most of which is not of direct interest to me but tantalizingly refers to a book written by his father Crawford Thompson Johnson (1848-1903) dated Belfast June 1870 which contained information on the “Mackays of Greenmount”. It would be brilliant if this book had survived but think it most likely that it has been lost and given that it was hand-written I don’t suppose that there were many copies made.
Greenmount is now the home of the College of Agriculture Food and Rural Enterprise where the current building was built about 1820 by Robert Thompson Esq replacing a previous villa on the Estate.
What were the Mackeys doing there? They seem to be a prosperous family and most of the men appear to have been Freemasons in Antrim.
I am proposing to visit PRONI and the genealogical section of the Linenhall Library in Belfast in the autumn and am hoping for suggestions for lines of enquiry.
