Abigail Flack granddaughter of the Rev Samuel Dunlop

AntrimBallintoy (Antrim)

I’m interested in the origins of my ×3 great grandmother, Abby Flack. In 1803, she was living in the townland of High Kilmahamogue in the Ballintoy parish in Antrim with her husband Neil Glass and 3 children (Kitty, Nancy and Jane) and stepdaughter Betty Knox. According to a book on the Hutchinson bequest, Abigail Flack was the granddaughter of the Reverend Samuel Dunlop through his daughter Abigail who married a Flack and had two children, Ann and Abigail.

The Reverend Samuel Dunlop (c.1680-1738) was an ordained Presbyterian minister who served in Athlone (1708-1722), Ramoan (1723-1733) and Manulla in Mayo (1733-1738) and was thought to have died in Manulla.  Samuel’s wife lived in the Coleraine area after his death at least until 1740.

Samuel had a son George Dunlop born in Athlone, Westmeath c.1715, who died at Armoy in 1778. A niece Ann McDugall is mentioned in George’s will, but Abigail isn’t named. By 1803, Abby, is Roman Catholic, so this may be the reason she has been omitted.

I would like to find out more about Samuel Dunlop’s wife and where and when their daughter Abigail was born. Also, when and where did Abigail Dunlop’s marriage to a Flack take place? Where do the Flack family come from?

Hello MaryB

Its always much more difficult to research ancestor details prior to mid nineteenth century as we are reliant on church records.  I've attached a guide that will hopefully point you in the right direction, these were developed by our Genealogist.

Thank you for the guide Bernadette. I realise it is a long shot to get any furrther information about ancestors before the nineteenth century.

I have become fascinated with the Rev. Samuel Dunlop since I discovered his existence. My gg grandmother was Abigail Flack's daughter, Nancy Glass, from Kilmahamogue who married Edward Donnelly of the neighbouring parish of Ballinlea.  Nancy and Edward's daughter, Anne (also known as Nancy) Donnelly married Hugh McKinley from Culraney near Cushendun and they emigrated to Australia.

They were such a staunch Catholic family that it's quite intriguing to realise there are Presbyterian ancestors.

MaryB,

Are you still on this page? I'm working on the Hutchinson Bequest and saw your post.

Hi Mary

I have been researching the Boyds of north Antrim with a friend for the last 4 years and Rev Samuel Dunlop is known to us in our research.

We would be happy to share any of our findings related to him and answer any queries where we can.

Hello Jonathan,

Thank you for your offer to help with information about the Reverend Samuel Dunlop. I became aware of him through the Hutchinson Bequest in 1986 when Cahal Dallat of Ballycastle did some research into my Donnelly and Glass ancestors. My great-great grandmother Nancy Glass is one of four daughters born to Neal Glass and Abby Flack of Kilmahamogue, Ballintoy. Abby Flack is listed among the rightful claimants of the Hutchinson Bequest in the Francis Dobbs report of 1796.

I believe Abby's claim comes because of her descent from Archibald Boyd of Ballycastle through his daughter Anaple who married Hugh Campbell and then a few generations later through the Rev Samuel Dunlop. I have rudimentary knowledge about Samuel Dunlop with the help of Dorothy Arthur who contacted me a few years back. She gave me information about Sam's entry in FASTI and information about his son George's burial in Armoy. I have an article entitled 'The Reverend Samuel Dunlop: an early pioneer in Irish Mission' (Bull. Pres. Hist. Soc. Ire.,39,2015) which gives a bit of insight into his life and character.

I have become quite intrigued by the Rev Samuel. and would be interested if you can tell me more about him and his background. Do you know anything about his wife? Or his daughter Abigail Dunlop who married a Flack. In the next generation Abby Flack (the daughter) is listed in the 1803 Traill census of Ballintoy as wife of Neal Glass and widow of John Knox. Abby and her daughters Betty Knox, Kitty, Nancy and Jane are all listed as Catholics so there clearly has been a change of religious allegiance.

Thanks again for your offer to share what knowledge you have.
