Weaver named Trulan or Truland

Does anyone know the name Trulan or Truland?

My ancestor, William Truland, was naturalized in the US in 1836, which, as I understand naturalization laws at the time, means he came to the US no later than 1822.  My family's oral tradition says he was a weaver (as am I!) from Antrim.  I have confirmed from US census records that he was indeed a weaver.  I have the original copy of his naturalization papers, and all it says is Ireland, no county.  I've run up against a dead end in my search for anything about him, and would appreciate any help in identify a possible parish from where he might have come.

There?s no-one of either name in Griffiths Valuation (1848-1864) or in the 1901 census for the whole of Ireland. So those two versions of the name are unknown here. Can?t really suggest for certain what the name would have been. The nearest, in spelling terms, is Trueman.

Thank you for checking.  I've learned more since my original post.  The likely spelling at the time was Troland or Trolan.  I've also learned the likely origin of the family was Ballymoney, and I've found several references to Trolan(d)s who lived there from the 18th to 20th centuries.  I'm going to post on the Ballymoney parish message board.

Naturally, if you have any information on Trolan(d) it would be greatly appreciated.

No Troland households in Griffiths Valuation but there?s several Trolan. If you think the family came from around Ballymoney then in 1861 there was a James Trolan in the townland of Ballygan Lower who had a small house such as an agricultural labourer/weaver would live in, and an Archibald Trolan in Seacon Lower, where he had a farmhouse, outbuildings and just over 9 acres of land.

By the 1901 census there was just the one Trolan family in Co Antrim. (And only 10 other Trolans in the rest of Ireland). The Antrim family, in Macfin Lower (which is near Ballymoney). The family were Church of Ireland (ie Episcopalian) which may be helpful if you come to search church records.

However there were quite a few Trolands in the 1901 census. Again around Ballymoney. A mix of Church of Ireland, Presbyterian & RC. So 3 lots of records to search.

4 people named Trolan(d) had probate files. See this site. The probate files are not on-line but the abstracts (summaries) are. The documents themselves should be in PRONI, save for the 1889 one which has been destroyed.

Thanks again for your help.  With this information, I've identified a likely specific location in Ballymoney where my ancestor may have lived.
