Young & Richardson

I would appreciate any information about my great grandparents and their parents:

Agnes Young (abt 1851-1906) married Samuel Richardson (abt 1845-1891) on August 9, 1882 at the parish church in Ballymacarrett, Down. (I have their marriage certificate.) They hadtwo sons: Thomas James (1884-1929) and FrederickHenry (1887-1965) - both of whom were born in Castlereagh, Down. (I have their birth certificates.)

[I believe Samuel was married previouslyto Anne Jane McClure Lavery on March 12,1866. I believe they had two daughters (Sarah Jane & Margaret)and 4 sons (Samuel, Albert, William & David) before Anne died in 1979. They lived in the Hollywood, Down area.]

Accordingto the marriage certificate, the father of Agnes was Thomas Young, who was a Foreman at Ritchies - which I gatherwas a ship yard. The father of Samuel is listed as James - a painter. Im having trouble finding any more information about Thomas Young & Samuel Richardsonor their wives.

Thanks,

Sue

Agnes and family in 1901. There appears to have been a daughter Susan, which if her age is accurate, must have been by Samuel’s first marriage who you haven’t mentioned in your post:

Agnes has a probate file in PRONI. She died intestate (so no will) but the file may contain some additional information on the family. Here’s the abstract:

Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Agnes Richardson late of 22 Symons-street Belfast Widow who died 28 October 1906 were granted at Belfast to Thomas Richardson Plater.

Regarding Thomas Young, Agnes’s 1882 marriage certificate says he was dead by that year. You could search the death records from 1864 to 1882 to see if you can find his. There look to be about 4 or 5 of men of the age to be a father of a woman born c 1851. Most are not on-line free yet but you can pay to view them on the GRONI site. If he died before 1864 it may be hard to trace him.

I noticed the birth of James Richardson to Samuel R & Ann Jane Lavery on 27.11.1868 in Ballymaghan (near Holywood). Samuel was a coachman at that date.

Thanks for the speedy reply.  I had not come across the birth of James Richardson and appreciate the tip.  I realize now that I should not have confidently stated the DOB amd DOD of Agnes Young, since I have reviewed those documents (1901 Census and will calendar) and thought they were for my great grandmother, but came across something that confirmed this was not the case.  (I don’t recall the specific piece of information but I think I found something indicating the husband of this Agnes was Robert.)  I plan to carry on with the assumption that Agnes Young’s birth and death dates are unknown - for now!  Thanks again!

I don't know if you will receive this Sue, however Samuel Richardson is my mother's Great Grandfather. The family were from Ballymacarrett / Castlereagh & Hollywood. Samuel was married twice and was a Painter/ Glazier / Window framer fitter etc as was his father James . Samuel Richardson Painter & Glazier & Widower of 23 Lord Street Ballymacarrett , Widower of full age married Agnes Young -Spinster of full age, of 22 Centre Street Ballymacarrett- also of full age in the Ballymacarrett Parish Church on the 9th of August 1882. Reverend Thomas Wellesley Roe was the Vicar of the kirk. The father of Agnes Young was Thomas Young- deceased and the father of Samuel Richardson was James Richardson - Painter - also deceased by August 1866. Death Certificate denotes the wrong age. Daughter Margaret Noble- Maiden name Richardson was born in 1853 as per census records 1901 and 1911. Margaret married Andrew Noble of Castlereagh, Shipwright- (Ship Builder/ Harland & Wolf Belfast) Please let me know if you see this. Sandie

Hi Sandie, I can’t tell you how excited I am to receive your message! I have so many questions for you! Some of the information in one of the previous messages is incorrect but all of your information is what I know to be true about my great grandfather, Samuel. Although I have some information about Samuel and my great grandmother, Agnes, I’ve had no luck confirming details about Margaret Noble (listed on his death certificate ) or her mother (Samuel’s first wife) whom I’m guessing is your relation? Wondering if this is the best platform for comparing notes or if email or Ancestry might be better. Please let me know. Thanks so much! Sue
