Wyse Family of Ireland

Hello: I am looking for Andrew Wyse born 1811 in Ireland but I do not know where or who his parents were. He immigrated to the USA or Canada but is first seen in the 1850 census for Buffalo, New York. His occupation is listed as labourer. He appears thereafter in subsequent censuses as a farmer. He died in Empire Michigan in 24 Apr 1893 and his tombstone lists his age as 82 . The only thing that I feel sure of is that he is not part of the rich Wyse family from St. Johns Manor, Waterford because he was a labourer and a farmer. He and his wife raised a large family and had quite an ordinary life for that time. I do not know when he immigrated but his first child was born in 1849 so he would have arrived before that. There are no records of an Andrew Wyse in Ireland between 1800 and 1850 that I can find.

I have searched many records looking for Wyse/Wise people and just cannot find any with an Andrew. Since he named his first born son Michael, I thought perhaps he followed the Irish naming convention of naming his first son after his father. I did find a few of those Michael Wyse people in Tipperary, Meath and Waterford. However, this information did not bear any results to my searches as the information is very scant.

Below are the records that I was able to find for Michael Wyse. Any suggestions or help anyone can provide would be enormously appreciated.

Thank you

Helen

Hello again!

I think all of the records you identified are useful leads.

The only close record on Roots Ireland was in 1817 and if your family was non-RC then you can ignore this record.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Hello you may find the Name Wise rather more helpful than Wyse used pre 1900s.
The name is Norman having originated Pembrokeshire UK the wise/Wyse name came in with King Henry 11. Easy to trace the clan moving forward from there.
Martin.

Also the Wise/Wyse family had two Branches one at Ballymabin Gaultier one at Islandikane Middlethird.

Hi Helen,

I have father and grandfather both Michael from Castlekeeran. My middle name also Michael. I have difficulty tracing further back beyond Griffiths Valuation in 1850s but you might be on the right track. I suspect there was a marriage along the way for your ancestors which resulted in change of religious denomination in your family.

I can track Wyse family back to WIZO a guy from Flanders who set up in Pembroke Wales Wiston Castle 1100 but family then migrated to Waterford only a short trip between two. Always a very strong connection to Knights Hospitalier (Kights of Malta- Slebech Church) hence Manor of St John in Waterford and also close connection to Crown particularly Henry VIII so always stayed Catholic (even if Henry didn't) and lost a lot of lands under Cromwell when he came to Ireland.

If you ever get to Waterford lots of history connected to Wyse family in museums there.

There are a lot of records online but most doesn't go back much before 1850s however there are baptism records for Kells from around early 1800s you could look into - available on nli.ie parish records.

Best of luck.

Just to say for Castelekeeran you need to search parish or carnations. Very confusing here because townlands do not match parish names.

Best of luck again.

Helen,

Another source that might be useful is virtualtreasury.ie. it is a virtual recreation of the Irish public records office blown up in the Irish Civil war. I remember seeing records of marriages between COI and Catholics and there were some Wyses listed. It might give you a lead.

A final few points of clarification Wyses are in Ireland so long that it is an ordinary surname but not that common. Vast majority of us are not wealthy at all. I said above that there was loyalty to the Crown but there was political upheaval since Famine 1850s onward and many/most became Republican after independence in 1922. We had a number of Wyse politicians on the Republican side since independence.

Interesting history. Sir Thomas Wyse was on the Royal Commission for designing the interior of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster when it was being rebuilt in 1840s. Jenny Wyse Power was one of the leading lights in the Irish women's republican movement for independence.

Hope you manage to locate what you are looking for.
