William Larmour

I was just wondering if anyone could help me possibly trace back my 3x great grandfathers family any further he was William Larmour from co down i think more specifically the downpatrick area as that’s where a lot of his children were born or all of them, he married Mary Killips i think they possibly married in Scotland as there’s no record of their marriage here and they married around 1872 i know that Mary lived in scotland for a while with her relatives also. Their son Robert Larmour born 29 september is my 2x great grandfather. they had several other children. Is anyone possibly able to find out who William’s parents were? thank you

Hello,

The 1901 and 1911 census records show him and his family living on Church St., Cookstown, Tyrone; and they show that he and his wife were both from county Down with their children born in Down, Armagh, and Tyrone. His occupation is gardener. They had 17 children altogether, but not all survived. Due to their eldest daughter's age, I believe they married around 1865, not 1872. On the paid site, Roots Ireland, I found a birth record for William Armour, born 2 Apr 1840 to parents Robert Armour & Agnes Brown. Their residence is Crossan in the Anahilt Presbyterian parish. There are no marriage records for that parish which is probably why you cannot locate one. Given that they named two of their children Robert and Agnes, this might be the information you are seeking. The surname could be transcribed incorrectly in this record. Since it shows that Mary was from Co. Down on the census records, my guess is that they married in Ireland, not Scotland. You might want to have a further look at the land records for Crossan, Down.

Carolyn

Thank you for that information, is their eldest daughter not elizabeth born around 1874? or did you find records for another child born after 1865.

Hello,

In the 1901/11 censuses, it looks like the eldest daughter was Elizabeth, whose married name was Hamilton. In 1911 she was a widow with a 2-year-old, Sarah.

Hello again,

My apologies, I miscalculated the eldest daughter's birth year using the 1901 census...they were probably married around the time you state.

Carolyn

Hi,

I found their marriage record on Ancestry: Name - Mary Killips

Gender - female

Marriage date - 6 Nov 1871

Marriage place - Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, UK

Spouse - William Larimer

Their son, James, was born in 1874 in Downpatrick. I have attached his record.

If you subscribe to Ancestry, there is a tree called the Horlor family tree that shows much more information, but you need to look carefully at the records as they are not all correct. It shows Mary in the 1871 Scotland census as a 17 year old with her parents and siblings. It shows that she was born in Ireland.

Regards,

Carolyn

And here is their first born son who only lived two years....it's challenging to find records when the surname is spelled so many different ways as seen here in these two records just two years apart
