William Kennedy (b about 1845) or Edward Kennedy his father

Hello, I am planning to visit Ireland (hopefully in the fall if fuel prices allow). On my father's side I am descended from William Kennedy who was born in Nenagh around 1845; his father was Edward Kennedy and his mother was Ellen Costello both born in Ireland. William Kennedy married Hannah Gorman on 8 May 1877 in Montreal. He had a brother John Kennedy who married Mary Anne Donnelly on 31 May 1864 in Montreal.

That is all the information I have about this side of the family. I would welcome any advice on researching this before visiting Nenagh or as part of a visit to Nenagh. Thank you.

Marianne:

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and the only baptismal record I could locate was for a Philip Kennedy baptized February 17th 1844 in the RC parish of Templederry/Killanave. This parish is southeast of Nenagh. Parents were Edward Kennedy and Ellen Costello. Sponsors were Thomas Butler and Judy Costello. No location was shown.

There were no other sibling records and no marriage record for the parents. Baptismal records for the parish start in September 1840.

When people emigrated to Canada or the States, they frequently indicated they were from the nearest large town rather than their smaller townland. Maybe that happened with William Kennedy.

The Griffiths Valuation records for Co. Tipperary are from around 1850. I located an Edmund Kennedy in Greenan townland in Templederry civil parish. Possibly there is a connection.

Thank you so much for this. I went back to the information I have - interestingly the notes I have found say he was born in Nenagh, but I looked back at his tombstone which says "Native of Nenach Co Tipperary" so that is consistent with the information you provided. I will refocus! Thank you again very much... this group is wonderful!
