William Gowin (Gowan, Going, Goin...)

This is a shot in the dark, but I'm hoping someone may be able to help me connect dots. William Gowin first appeared in colonial America on records within Virginia in 1752. His last name was recorded as GOWIN, however the use of phonetics at that time also had him recorded as GOWAN/GOING/GOIN on other records. His pattern of travel within and out of Virginia seem to suggest an Ulster-Scots migration pattern suggesting he may have arrived to colonial America during the great migration. Prior to that there is no connection to any other family with that surname within Virginia and the trail runs cold. I have taken DNA tests (male Y-dna chromosome and autosomal DNA) in hopes of finding a connection. From what I've researched, my surname seems to cluster at Offaly, Leitrim, and Cork. -Robert

Hi @Ballypierce, Thanks for the help! Are there any of this spelling still in the area? Also, are there records that might date back to the early and mid-1700s?

Robert .There still Gowing Gowen & Gowen name in the Laoise Offaly area. There are no official  records going back to 1700.s in Ireland. The only way is old letters or a family Bible that went out from Ireland to the new country.

I think this is why we've struggled to connect the dots. It's challenging to find any documentation in colonial USA or within Ireland or even Scotland. It's why we've also turned to using DNA to help us complete the story.

We have had about 14 male descendants of our last known Gowin ancestor test their y-chromosome DNA. These participants and cousins descend from "William Gowin" who we call "WG" through 4 of his sons and by us all participating in the y-DNA study, we were able to determine WG's own y-DNA markers since y-chromosome DNA changes very little as it passes from father to son along the males paternal line.

Our goal now is to try to reach out to those who carry our surname or variant and see if they've tested their own y-chromosome DNA to possibly find relatedness. If they haven't tested y-DNA, we hope to work with them to test. The information that is gleaned from y-DNA testing is amazing for genealogy, but its really interesting for understanding the migration path of your paternal ancestor more deeply than autosomal DNA (23andME, Ancestry, MyHeritage, etc.).

Would love to connect with any GOWIN/GOWING/GOWEN/GOWAN in the Laoise Offaly area to discuss this topic. Their support of this study really helps everyone whose family has migrated from Ireland and Scotland.
