William Aiken

I am looking for information about my husband's grandfather. His name was William John Aiken and he came to Canada from Ireland. We think that he was born about 1877. We do not know when he came to Canada but he married Rose Steele on April 22, 1922. They had 4 children and lived in Alberta when she died giving birth to another child. He left the 4 children with her sisters and brothers in Saskatchewan and went back to Ireland. There were a few letters from him but not much information. He died in Derg Valley Hospital on Oct. 26, 1964 and was buried in Killettes churchyard. His wife Fanny was ill at the time of his death. He also had a nephew named Andie Aiken that lived in Omagh and worked on the railway. If anyone can help us with this, we would appreciate it.

dwyatt,

The age given on William John’s death certificate is 77 which would mean he was born around 1887.  The death certificate may give you his home address and next of kin.

There was a marriage registered on 11.8.1943 between a William Aiken and a Fanny Cooper, in Strabane.  Also on 26.7.1944 between a William Aiken and a Fannie Bruce. Perhaps one of those is the second wife.

You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

Ideally you need one of William John’s marriage certificates to get his parents names, to identify the right family in Ireland. The name William Aiken is fairly common in Ireland so there’s a risk of identifying the wrong family if you don’t have parents names but this might be him in the 1901 Irish census:

No sign of him in 1911, so perhaps he had left Ireland:

Incidentally, William John’s place of burial is probably Killeter, not Killettes.
