When was Ballynure first settled by protestant Scots?

Hi there,

I have Beatty ancestors buried in the Ballynure Old Graveyard. The oldest is John Beatty who died October 29, 1825 aged 52. I am wondering when John or his ancestors may have first come to Ballynure. Would they have come directly from Scotland or from from some other part of Ulster? Any insight you may have would be welcome.

Thanks,

Susan Beatty

Sue,

The vast major of Scots arrived in Ireland in the 1600s. 1610 onwards. Some 200,000 are estimated to have arrived then (representing something like 15% of the entire Scottish population). There was internal migration within Ireland but those who settled in Co Antrim simply came directly from Scotland  (which is only about 11 miles away at the closest point). It wasn’t a big journey.

Dr David Hume’s Book “Eagles Wings - the Story of the Ulster Scots” explains it in considerable detail and explains why many later decided to leave and move the North America (and elsewhere).
