Waterford McGrath's

Hi Folks, Looking for roots of my 2nd great grandfather, John McGrath, born Waterford approximately1825. He married Catherine Murphy (birth is ?May 1829, perhaps earlier): they wed approximately 1844 in Waterford.

First son Michael McGrath born 1845, followed by my great grandfather John J. McGrath June 1849. He left Ireland, and arrived in New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA where he married, had a family and died.

Would love to know John McGrath's parents (I presume they would have been born late 1700's to 1800) and I believe Catherine Murphy's parents were John Murphy (b ~1790) and possibley Johanna?

Any connections or thoughts, thank you! Peg Sullivan

Hello again!

I searched on Roots Ireland and did not locate a marriage record for John and Catherine. I also searched for baptismal records for Michael and John and located two records. The one for Michael is likely too early and the John record is September 1848 rather than June 1849. There likely were a number of John McGrath/Catherine Murphy couples. Let me know what you think.

Hi Roger, Thank you so much for replying and so quickly!  You know, I looked back at the death certificates of Michael McGrath and John McGrath and this could very well be them.  The dates of birth were listed as "about" a certain year, though the parents and the county (Waterford) were definite.

So a definite perhaps!  They certainly look about right

(the names of my relatives are so common, that I am certain, as you say, there were many couples with the same names.)   Thanks again!  Peg Sullivan
