Walter Garland

Hello All, this is my first visit to this site, (well actually its my second! think I messed up on the first one!). My DNA has me as more Irish than English, which was a bit of a surprise. My 3 x times great Grandfather was Walter Garland, who gives his ages & place of birth on the 1841 & 1851c as born in Ireland in 1795. This is the only information I have! His 7th child was a boy, namedThomas OLeary Garland. Could the OLeary be a clue and if so, can any one please point me inthe direction of where I should begin my Irish search?

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The surname Garland was primarily found on the northeast coast starting with Co. Dublin and Meath and moving up to Co. Antrim. Co. Louth and Co. Armagh had the most Garland families in the mid-19th century. O'Leary is a Co. Cork and Co. Kerry surname. Maybe his wife was an O' Leary.

I did search the subcription site Roots Ireland. Most churches do not have records back to 1795 but surprisingly I did find a 1795 baptismal record for a Walter Garland in Co. Wexford (Wexford town). I have no idea if this is your Walter or another who happened to be born in the same year. Note his mother's maiden name was Cleary. Is that a clue?

Hello Roger, Thank you so much for replying and for the information and your research on my behalf.  That’s much appreciated.  My Walter married Elizabeth Warren in 1825 in Northampton where on the Banns, he is described as a bachelor aged 30.  I guess at that age, he could easily have been married before (& maybe in Ireland) I have no idea when he came to England as he was 45 on the1841 c which is the first document I have for him. A coincidence? that you found a Walter Garland with his Mother’s maiden name Clary, as I struggled with the writing on a handwritten birth Index for his son Thomas Olary, thinking it could also be Clary. However I sent for the certificate which was a handwritten transcription with the name Olary...& no apostrophe.  Now I wonder if this has been altered from Clary down the line ... possible?

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you.

Regards

Hello. My name is Rob Garland from Canada. I’ve been researching Garlands in Ireland for some time. My family came from the Kilkenny/Carlow border but I believe from Wexford prior to that. Possibly Newtownbarry or Bunclody. My last known ancestor was a William Garland born maybe 1740-50 ish. He had children born in the 1770’s. Some of his grown children emigrated to Canada. Their children were born in the 1790s like your Walter in Ireland. It’s possible that my William had a son William who married Bridget Clery (sometimes called Clark) who had your Walter. I did my DNA and turns out we are probably descended from the Wexford Vikings. Is there a living male Garland in your line that would do a Y DNA test to compare to mine?  If we are a match then that would be a piece of the puzzle. my DBA was done at Family Tree DNA and is part of the Garland project but no matches yet. I feel this family is very specific to this part of Ireland and this version of the surname originated there.
My family were church of Ireland but my emigrant ancestor whose name was John, was married to Ellinor Butler a Roman Catholic.
I hope to hear from you.
Regards,

Rob Garland.
