Walsh family near Castlebar

I was just in Castlebar and believe I have found what was left of my Walsh family home.  According to the most recent information, the family appeared to live in Drumneen, by Aghadrina, south of the new bypass going around Castlebar.  A neighbor told me he thought the family might have moved to Turlough, and thought there might have been an Ernest Walsh.  Information from the clearing by Lord Lucan indicates that the family may have moved to the Mount Daisy/Derrywash area for a while, although the baptismal record from the Aglish parish in Castle bar for my gr grandmother, Sarah Agnes Walsh in 1853, indicates that they lived in Drumneen.  If anyone know of any Walsh family members who have ancestors who may have lived in any of the above areas, I would love to hear from you.

The family names were

Richard Walsh b around 1802,

wife Mary

son Martin b around 1830

daughter Hannah Marie b around 1843

son John Henry b around 1848

daughter Bridget b around 1850

daughter Sarah Agnes bap Feb 1853

The men were all stone masons

Thank you!

Barbara:

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and it appears that Mary's maiden name was also Walsh. I found five other baptismal records in Aglish where the parents were Richard Walsh and Mary Walsh: Honoria 1842 (likely your Hannah) Michael 1843 Ellen 1844 Patrick 1847 John 1850. I did not find the marriage record. A;so. baptismal records were not available back to 1830 so I could not verify Martin.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household records show two Richard Walsh records. One Richard lived in the town on Spencer St. and the other lived in Knockcroghery townland. As stone masons, it is possible that Richard Walsh did not have enough land to show up in the Griffiths.

Now searching for descendants of Pat Walsh and Mary Browne, married 1901. He was son of John, from Castlebar, she was from Drumneen, Aghadrina. 2 sons Ernest born 1901 and James born 1904. In 1911 census listed as liviing in Drumneen. Ernest married Mary Gordon and died April 1987. Son Anthony b 1944, d 2023 Castlebar, daughter Mary mar Pat McLoughlin, she d 2013, son Patrick emigrated to England? d. 2013 or 14.

James married Celia Hoban 1932. No further info on him.

I believe these people are related as my gr grandmother Sarah Walsh was born in Drumneen and her father Richard was listed in the clearances of Lord Lucan as living there and possibly moving for a time to Mount Daisy.

I was given a mobile number of a Bernie Moran who arranged Anthony's funeral last year, but when I tried contacting this person, I got no response. Anyone in the Castlebar area who could help with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Barbara:

I'm not sure what the Moran funeral home's policy is for contacting relatives of a deceased individual. This obit has some additional phone numbers. https://rip.ie/death-notice/anthony-tony-walsh-mayo-castlebar-544291 Maybe they would be willing to contact the family member who arranged the funeral and provide your phone number/email address.

Have now found James Walsh, brother of Ernest, who died December 1976 in the Cool Lodge area, buried at St Patrick's in Ballyheane. Any way to get info on him, maybe from someone who lived in this area?

Hi Barbara,

We may be related. My great-great-great grandmother was Bridget Walsh. She left to the United States and married John Dunning around 1870, a man from Glasgow and had many sons, one of them being my grandfathers grandfather. We had lost her roots, but i did a DNA test and found roots in the Connacht, centered in Castlebar. I'm not sure how many Bridget Walsh's were born around that time in that area, but chances are high! Would love to hear from you!

Kind Regards,

Helen
