Visiting Ireland County Galway June 2025 - Moloney family

I am visiting Ireland for a week in June and hope to find more family information - Surname Moloney. My grandfather (Richard Moloney) and his siblings, plus my great grandparents. I'd like to find any information on where they lived/moved to, their children etc and whether any family is still in the area. My late mother obtained copies of the birth/baptismal for the Moloney family, and marriage of my great grandparents (Patrick Moloney to Mary Conroy), from the church in the diocese of Clonfert in the parish of Woodford back in 2004. I am researching on ancestry.com and have the 1911 census with the family living in Looscaun.

My Great grandparents are: Patrick Moloney DOB; 5th April 1857 County Galway was married to Mary Conroy Year born: 1873. They got married on 21st May 1894 in the church of Woodford - Catholic.

They lived in Looscaun, near Portumna in County Galway, according to 1911 Irish census. They had 8 children born on the census, but not all the children are listed:

Kathleen Moloney 1896 (not on census)

1897- Catherine Moloney

1899 - Mary Moloney

1901 - Michael Moloney

1903 - Thomas Moloney

1904 - Patrick Moloney

1906 - Edward Moloney

Margaret Elizabeth - 1908-1908 (not on census)

1909 - John Joseph Moloney (died in Solihull West Midlands 1982)

1911 - Richard Joseph Moloney (died in Highbury London 1975) (not on census as born in August same year)

I hope someone is able to help with any new information so I can plan my visit to walk where my ancestor's once did. Thanks

Stephanie

Stephanie,

I found birth records for Richard's siblings on RootsIreland (paid subscription). They also can be found on Irishgenealogy (free) Irish Genealogy - Explore your Family History along with marriage and death records. On the birth records I found other addresses in Woodford identified- Douras, Rockhill, and Upper Forge. Based on your message I assume you already have all the baptism records.

You could research death records on Irishgenealogy or check if siblings got married and stayed in the area.

Hello MaryTV Thank you so much for your quick reply and information, very useful. Yes I do have copies of the birth records for my grandfathers siblings but I now need to find marriage and death records so I will see if I can find this on the Irish Genealogy site. The spelling of Moloney is sometimes recorded as Maloney, which can be confusing but part of the fun in searching I guess. I would really like to find some relatives, or local people that may have known the Moloney family. My late mother was corresponding with her cousin Kathleen Glynn (nee Rafferty) from Derrybrien. Kathleen's mother was Kathleen Moloney (my great aunt) born 1896 who married Thomas Rafferty. So I have some information first hand but need to try and find the documents too and anything else for the other siblings. So the Moloney family also have connections to the surname Glynn and Rafferty. The search goes on. Thank you again for your help. Kind regards Stephanie

Perhaps you might post a message on https://www.facebook.com/eastgalwayroots/ or send them an email? It's a local group, based in Woodford, so maybe someone local would be able to assist you. Good luck!

Hi,

according to Galway co co burial records

http://www.galway.ie/burialgroundregisterscans/GC-ENV2-28,

Dooros (Portumna) Patrick Maloney 84 10/02/1948 Clonroe;

Thomas Maloney & his wife, I believe are buried in Douras Cemetery. I think that’s Moloney not Maloney.

Rafferty’s are buried in Abbey or Ballinakill cemetery’s.

Glynn Derrybrien.
