Trying to trace my deceased Grandparents birth certificates.

I am looking for my Irish Grandparents birth certificates.  They were both Catholic.  I have established that there are no recorded civic records for them. I am Scottish and my mother was born in Scotland,  but I know my grandparents were Irish.  They moved to Scotland somewhere around 1900, and had their family there.  They both died before I was born.

I have both death certificates for my Grandmother and my Grandfather, and I have seen the gravestone in Port Glasgow Scotland.

Because I have the death certificates I have the names of the father and mother on both sides.

My Grandfather was born in 1873 ( day and month not known)

My Grandmother was born in 1884 ( day and month not known)

They are recorded in the Scottish census of 1921 as being from Ballynakill, Galway, but I have no idea which part or the parish.  Anyone give me a steer of where to look next?  Are there central birth records or are they all held per parish?

I really appreciate any help.

Holly,

It would be helpful if you could provide your grandparents names.

Regards- Mary

Holly,

What were their names? Maiden name for your grandmother too.

Carolyn

With Ballynakill you need to be aware there are 4 separate townlands named that in Co. Galway. 2 are in the parish of Ballynakill and 2 are in other parishes.  So obviously you’ll need to check them all to be sure of finding the right family.

All births in Ireland from 1864 onwards should be on this free website:

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/search/

The 4 Ballynakills are in the following civil registration districts: Gort, Glennamaddy, Loughrea & Ballinasloe. So where it says “location” on the search page, you should enter one of those.

Holly,

There is also Ballinakill in Connemara in the area of Letterfrack.

McCoy

Holy

First, know there are (at least) two Ballynakills in County Galway. One is in Connemara (around Renvyle/Letterfrack), the other is in east Galway (near Woodford/Loughrea). Pinning down which one matters.

Ireland has central civil birth records (not just parish books). Birth registration began in 1864. Search the General Register Office (GRO) indexes on IrishGenealogy.ie. To narrow results:

  • Try the Clifden registration district for the Connemara Ballynakill.
  • Try Loughrea/Portumna districts for the east-Galway Ballynakill.

Use what Scotland already gives you to sharpen the search:

  • Get your grandparents’ Scottish marriage or death certificates (ScotlandsPeople) for parents’ names and exact ages. Those details let you spot the right Irish birth in the GRO index.

If civil hits are thin, check Catholic parish registers (NLI parish registers) using the parents’ names. Remember: civil parishes ≠ Catholic parishes, so search both Ballynakill areas if unsure.

Map clues with townlands.ie or logainm.ie. If a townland pops up on a record, you’ll see instantly which Ballynakill it belongs to.

Thanks to all the replies above, I am heartened that after months and months of searching I'm getting some really good outside advice.

@MaryTV & Carolyn, the names are;-

Grandfather - Patrick Carroll, B 1873 ( plus or minus 1 year) Died 1946 aged 73 years.

Father Patrick Carroll

Mother Bridget Carroll nee Flaherty

Grandmother - Bridget Carroll, B 1884 ( plus or minus 1 year) Died 1935 aged 51 years.

Father John O'Hare

Mother Bridget O'Hare nee O'Malley.

If you can offer help on this info  I'd appreciate it.

@tulgablack3030, thanks so much for all the info Ill try all your advice and the sites you have recommended.

@Elwyn,IrelandXO Volunteer ☘ I've tried that Irish genealogy site and I don't think it has Baptismal records.  Unfortunately I don't think there are civic records for my Grandparents, but I have been advised that was not unusual at the time, especially in the more remote parts of rural Ireland.  But I didn't know about the different Ballynakills, that makes things even more complicated, but at least now I know,

@MCoy - thanks I'm going to try those site you have given.

Cheers all.

I found this death cert which may be your Bridget Hare (O'Hare, or Hehir) , there was no other death cert for similar in Cliften so keep this in mind as a possibility. The spelling of names was not very precise in that period, also dates .

This is amazing, Thank you so so much!  I've been trawling through unreadable  microfilm for days, getting nowhere.  But these could certainly be the records for my family.  I am so impressed and can't thank you enough for your time and efforts.

I'll post back when I've had a chance to look at the results properly.

I'm not sure how to thank you Eileen and Elwyn but all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle are now falling into place.  I'm positive that all these records above are now relevant.

I have to say you have succeeded where officials sources have failed.  I've been told from both the Scottish office archives and the Irish records office that no records existed.  I even have that in writing.

Although that has wasted a lot of time for me, well over a year, I have persisted in the search and in Scotland I found the records myself, but you have filled the gaps for the Irish side.  I'm sure I wouldn't have managed what you have achieved,  so a million thanks to you both.

Is there a fund for volunteers or anything I can donate to?

I am truly grateful.
