Trying to find kean family info

Hello ! We have been trying for years to find the parish and dates of our paternal kean ancestors -- birth, departure for America, other relatives, and general history. We know that Patrick Kane and wife Bridget (Reagan) emigrated some time before the late 1840s, as we have land deeds of two of the sons dating from that time, in Michigan, where they settled. From that point on, records are quite good, but we have never been able to determine any info on Patrick and Bridget and would love to know anything more about our original (immigrant) ancestors, any of their history. Our Grandpa said they were from Cork, and all of my searching so far has been in vain, as we have no info on their parish or even a ballpark date of birth(s). I am guessing Patrick Kean was born around 1770 or so, as his oldest son was born in 1808. Thanks so much !!

Hello Beau,

I have read and reread your post and am a little confused regarding the date range???  If as you think that Patrick was born about 1770 that would mean that he was approx 75 years of age when he emigrated.  This seems a little strange to me but as it was during the famine then I suppose it is possible.  It's important to know his childrens names and whether they were born in Ireland or USA?

Could you send me this information and I will try to search for their baptismal records.  Then you would know what parish and town that they came from.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Kind regards,

Dear Anne,

Thank you kindly for your response.  I have had a major surgery and am just now seeing your response of 2014.

Patrick Kean and Bridget (Regan, or Reagan) Kean emigrated from County Cork (we think) sometime prior to 1847.  They had 5 children.  The oldest, Thomas, is listed in the Michigan census records and death records as being born in 1808 in Ireland.  The youngest, Patrick, is listed on his Michigan death certificate as being born in 1831, in Mayo, Ireland.   I calculated that a young man of Patrick Sr.'s era would be having children at 30 years of age or so, women younger. But he could also have been 20-25.  I'm just guessing at this, but that's how I arrived at a birth date for Patrick Kean.  The Michigan census records list wife Bridget as being 74 years old in 1860; she died in 1873.  That would make her birth date around 1786.  They would not have been young when they emigrated, you are correct; presumably they all came together.  Thomas and John made their first land purchase in Michigan in November 1847 - I have that original land deed, and several others.

There are no other Michigan records for Patrick Sr.  Michigan death records were first collected in 1867, so presumably he passed away before state records were kept.  There are other death ledgers at county and church, however.  My grandfather wrote a wonderful family tree, but did not put the year of emigration or town(s) of origin or residence in Ireland.   Any help would certainly be appreciated!  My older sister is coming to Ireland on a trip in 2 1/2 weeks and could possibly go to Cork for research.  She will be in Dublin & other places, will be in Ireland for a month.   Thanks so much, Mary Kane.

I am related to the Keans you mention in this posting.

The name is spelled Kean and pronounced KANE, in my branch.

Catherine Kean is my gggrandmother .

Her brother is Patrick James "Patsy" Kean, is also on find a grave.

He was also known as  "P.J. Kean."

I was supposed to be a boy, and was named Patricia, after him.

Their parents were Patrick Kean and Bridget Regan Kean.

I believe the father's middle initial was E.

I was told Catherine was married in Wexford.

Her husband was John Garry, born Claremorris, Mayo, Ireland.

Their children were John Joseph Garry/Gearey known as "JJ"

and Thomas J? Garry.

I am descended from JJ.

My Kean cousin, Joanne Weimer, used to post on genealogy.com, as did I.

She had a lot of info on the Keans.

The cemetery in Marine City, Michigan, Holy Cross Cemetery,  holds many Kean and

Garry  graves. There is a Bridget Kean monument near John Garry in that

cemetery.

Go to findagrave.com on the above link.

And please, someone, contact me.

I would love to see that family tree mentioned on your posting.
