My grandfather Daniel Scully was born a RC in Co Donegal on 20 July 1872. In the village of Croaghcross. . His parents listed as Patrick and Annie( me Driscoll) also from Croaghcross. I'm keen to find out more details about Patrick and Annie ..and where to look

Croaghcross is in the parish of Clondevaddock.. Any help in getting more information would be much appreciated. Thanks Geoff Buckley

The father Patrick was recorded as a Coastguard on most of the births. Scully is not a common name in Donegal and I suspect he was born elsewhere in Ireland (and moved to Donegal as part of his work).

No more births after 1875 in that area so did he move to a posting elsewhere?

You might find information on the places he served on this site:

Possibly Annie's death in Baltimore Co. Cork in 1905:

Informant was daughter A. Roche. Her marriage to John Roche in 1900

Scully family in 1901 census:

Note that Ann Driscoll was a native of Cork. So she may have been born around Baltimore.

Family in 1911:

There are several trees on Ancestry with the family. You may get more information from them.

I located a possible marriage for this couple a long way from Co. Donegal where the children were born. The parish is called "Rath and the Islands" and is located to the west of Skibbereen in County Cork, which is close to 4 or 5 Coastguard stations..

'Patritius Scully' and 'Anna Driscole' married on the 26th July 1862 in this parish, the witnesses both appear to have the surname Scully.

You can view the register page at the following link : Film 04774/01 page 008 (see near the top of the left page)

p.s. the town of Baltimore is a short distance east of this parish. see below for extract from 1838 map highlighted are town of Baltimore and "the Islands"

Shane,

Well done. I looked for a possible marriage too but failed!

I found it earlier, and was thinking about posting it... both 'Cork' surnames but a very long way from Donegal, maritime location.. only spotted your finds re Baltimore after I posted .. looks even more promising with those clues!

Well done Shane and Elwyn, I would never have made the connection with Cork, Geoff will be delighted, as I am.

The clue for me came from the fact that he was a Coastguard. They moved all around Ireland in a way that most labourers, weavers and farmers didn’t. So I was half expecting him to turn up somewhere slightly surprising but in a coastal location. (Or even in England, as they could be posted there too). Normally we expect folk in Ireland to remain fairly static, and are sceptical of those who are reported to have moved from “Derry to Kerry”, but some did where there was good reason. As here.

My guess is that Patrick & Annie met in Cork and went back there either as a final posting in the Coastguard or after retirement, because they had family there.

Extract from Coastguard records ref. ADM175/55, - I suspect this is probably 'your' Patrick :

This record is for the Coastguard station at Sheephaven in Dunfanaghy Coastguard district, Patrick Scully appears to have signed on in April 1866, and gives date of birth as 17th March 1838 in 'Creagh, Co. Cork', which is a civil parish that includes part of the town of Skibbereen and areas to the west. Patrick is a Commissioned Boatman with three badges, and was transferred to nearby Rathmullen coastguard station on the 27th September 1877.
