Townland maps 1911 1901 with dwelling numbers

Hi! I want to say that I have seen the townland maps that denotes the dwelling number locations based on the 1901 and 1911 census. However I am not able to locate online. And I don’t see attached to the census record unless I am missing it. Does anyone know where I can get the maps based on the census records?

thanks!

The house numbers shown in the 1901 and 1911 censuses were not an official address. RIC constables collected completed census forms soon after March 31 1901 and March 31 1911. When a constable went to a townland. the first house he visited was house 1, second house house 2 and so on until all houses were visited. I'm not aware of townland maps which showed dwelling numbers based on the two censuses.

However, the Griffiths Valuation conducted from 1847-1864 did show tenants, their house number and the location of the dwelling within the townland. askaboutireland.ie provides these maps by townland.

Dawn,

In my experience there are no maps linked to the censuses. Each enumerator had their own private numbering system and their records have long been disposed of. Probably worth mentioning that the house numbers in the 1901 are not necessarily the same properties as in 1911. Depends on how each enumerator chose to go round the townland.

As Roger has said, the Griffiths Valuation maps do show where most properties were (save in towns). In some cases you may need to use the Valuation revision records, which take Griffiths forwards to 1929, to locate some properties. Especially if an occupant in 1901 wasn’t in Griffiths.

Thank you for clarifying for me! The Griffiths may have been what I saw.
