Timothy Shaughnessy

I have been looking for ancestry for my GGGrandfather Edward Shaughnessy, who according to his military pension record was born in Ardrahan in 1829. According to his marriage record, which took place in Madras, where he was with the 43rd Infantry, his father was called Timothy.

I have recently found a Timothy Shaughnessy, also a soldier, but with the 13th Infantry, born in Aughrim, Galway in 1780 and discharged in 1819. It seems quite possible that he was Edward's father.

I have looked in vain for a baptism for Edward, or marriage for a Timothy or Thady, or burial for Timothy. He is likely to have died before 1839 as his wife married again in Dublin in May 1839.

I'm no longer sure they are related to the Shaughnessys of Ardrahan - though many thanks to Rory Shaughnessy for the information he has sent.

Does anyone know anything about a Shaughnessy family in Aughrim?

Thanks, Sarah

Thanks to Rory, some 8years later(!). I agree with the Ardrahan connection. I recently came across Pigot's 1824 directory with an Edward Shaughnessy in Gort as a woollen and linen draper with Ann Shaughnessy and a grocer called Mary Shaughnessy. Think my Edward may tie in with them. My thoughts about Edward's father Timothy are that he may have been born in Aughrim Clare, which is much closer to Gort than Aughrim Galway. The army officer who recruited him may have guessed at Aughrim Parish in Galway. I'd be very interested to know what other people think.
