THOMAS WRAY MARRIED 1828 IN GALLOON COUNTY FERMANAGH IRELAND

My 3x great grandfather was Thomas WRAY. The only date I have for him is 1828 when he married Mary MORTON in the parish of Galloon County Fermanagh. I have no idea when he was born although his wife was born in 1805. I do know that he was a school teacher and ran a school in Coolcrannel , Fermanagh as early as 1824 and at least until 1838. He and Mary had four known children William born 1829 who went to Canada, Elizabeth born 1832 who went to Australia , Mary Ann born 1835 who went to Australia and Alexander born 1838 who went to Canada after the death of their mother in 1842 or later after a period in the Liskenaskeaworkhouse. My question is what happened to my ancestor Thomas WRAY after the death of his wife and the departure of his children? Also can anyone tell me how old you had to be to teach in the schools run by the London Hibernian Society? Several years ago I paid a researcher in Ireland to look for Thomas Wray. He could find no death record for him .It appears that heput 3 of his children in the workhouse and sent the eldest off to relatives in Canada. After that who knows?

Thomas was Church of Ireland.

If Alexander ended up in Lisnaskea workhouse, I’d guess it was because both his parents were dead. Unfortunately the admission records for that workhouse for the period you are interested in are lost so we won’t be able to find anything from that source. Galloon Church of Ireland has very good records of baptisms, marriages and burials from 1798 onwards. So it might be worth checking them for a burial.  Having said that, Coolcrannel is in Aghalurcher parish so you might need to check their records too. There’s several churches in the parish. Aghalurcher itself has burial records from 1802 & Lisnaskea from 1804.

There’s a copy of all these records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. If you can’t go in person you might need to get a researcher to go.

Thanks Elwyn for your reply.  I have edited my post to explain that no death could be found for Thomas in the 1840s and 1850s .

Hi Sheila

I live in Hastings County, Ontario, Canada and I have been tracing my roots (many of them Irish) for over 35 years.

Recently while having a look for anything new, I came across the name of a Robinson Morton in Hastings County.  Since I have Irish

Robinson ancestors in Hastings County  from Galloon, Ireland,  I decided to have a look at Robinson Morton.

Long story short.  There is a Morton/Robinson connection to Robinson Morton in Galloon Ireland. My Robinson ancestors were also from Galloon and came over to Hastings County ca 1831. Parish of Galloon records 1798 - 1830

James Morton and Dorothy Robinson - both of Drummully were married May 29, 1821.  I believe that this couple are ancestors of Robinson Morton

Further searches lead me to your posting for Thomas Way and Mary Morton who married in 1828 in Galloon. You believe that William Wray - son of Thomas (also shown as William) and Mary Morton was sent to Canada.  After some searching I believe that your Wray ancestors settled in Hastings County, Ontatrio - near or with the Mortons of Thomasburg and Moira - Hastings County.

If you would like any futher information, I would be available ot help if you need someone to look in Ontario.  I love puzzling families back together!

Bye for now

Glenda
