Thomas Sullivan, Galway

I am trying to find any information on my ancestors.

My Great-grandfather Thomas Sullivan emigrated to Australia in 1879, but went to England first. The Ship's document gives his origin as Co.Galway but nothing more specific.

He would have been born in about 1854. His father's name was also Thomas and mother Sarah (nee Joyce).

The elder Thomas was recorded as deceased farmer in 1876 when the younger married Mary Burke (formerly of Mayo) in Newcastle-on-Tyne.

I would grateful to learn the circumstances of Thomas leaving Ireland and any antecedents.

This is the only Galway death / burial record which comes up for Thomas Sullivan and surname variants 1866-76 on www.rootsireland.ie/

Annoyingly no age is given so no birth year can evaluated.

I am away from home at present & have a cd which has grave inscriptions from Galway & Mayo so will have a look when I get home on Monday.

If COL has identified the correct death record the link to 1901 census below may also be a match. John may have been a son and called his first son Thomas also. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Galway_West_Urb…

Gary no luck on the Memorials cd I'm afraid.

I couldn't find Thomas junior's birth record on rootsireland either.

The only marriage record for Thomas Sullivan to a Joyce is a Bridget in 1877 - much too late.

I notice that findmypast.ie/ (credit required) has a few entries like this:

I have seen some prison register references but Thomas was in Newcastle in 1876 and arrived in Australia in 1879 so I discounted those possibilities.
