The Thomas Smyth Town Clerk family of Mullingar
I would have thought that a town clerk's record would be easy to find but cannot find a birth or death record for Thomas Smyth of Mullingar who was town clerk in Mullingar. According to a newspaper article I found, he died in August 1900.
He married Ellen D’Arcy on 31 Dec 1863. As far as I can make out from two records on rootsireland, she was born in 1836. They had 4 daughters and a son.

Thomas Bernard died young at the age of 22. He was also a clerk and was unmarried when he died.
My great grandfather John Joseph Cyril Smyth was born about 1883. On his marriage certificate to Anne Mary Dixon in 1916, his father is recorded as Thomas Smyth, Town Clerk.
Again - I can find no record of his birth, and I cannot find him on the 1901 census. Thomas Bernard, also a town clerk, died as a bachelor but it was my understanding that he was JJ's father and that the mother was called Eileen or Helena. Ellen Darcy would have been nearly 50
Would appreciate if anyone has an idea of solving this puzzle
