Hi Kate,
According to www.findmypast.ie (a subscription site so unfortuantely I can't provide the link), a Thomas Slattery was born Apr-Jun 1929 in Glenmaddy, Galway. Mother's maiden name was Ward.
This marriage cert on www.irishgenealogy.ie is a perfect match for his parents, making them James Slattery and Margaret Ward. It also provides their father's names - Patrick Slattery and James Ward, which brings you back a generation further.
James Slattery in the 1901 & 1911 census:

I think this is Margaret Ward in the 1901 & 1911 census:

The best free resources for further research on this family would be www.irishgenealogy.ie, which has birth records (1864-1919), marriage records (1864-1944) and death records (1878-1969). the 1901 and 1911 census records are also available on http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/. FindMyPast also has a free record collection of Catholic parish baptisms and marriages which go back before 1864.
Hope some of this helps!
Alicia
