Thomas Maguire son of Patrick Maguire and Bridget ODonohoe

My paternal Grandmother Catherine Maguire was the daughter of Thomas Maguire who emigrated to Australia in 1859 on the ship Hornet. He was from Snugborough Ballyconnell Co Cavan. I am coming to Ireland in early May and going to the area to find any information about Thomas father Patrick and his father/grandfather if possible. I have contacted the Parish office to see if there may be records I can look at but have not received an answer as yet. Any suggestions for organisations or people who might be able to help me would be gratefully accepted.

Unfortunately, the RC baptismal records for the RC parish of Kildallen (Ballyconnell) do not begin until January 1867 and marriage records start in 1859.

I checked the 1855 Griffiths Valuation records for Snugborough townland and there were no Maguire records. There were Maguire records in other parts of the civil parish (Tomregan) including a Patrick Maguire in Carrowmore townland.

I did not find any information in the Tithe records.

If you have not done so already, please complete this form https://www.irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet  regarding your visit to Ireland

I did not find a good lead for a death record for Patrick Maguire. Civil registration of deaths started in 1864.

Let me know if you have any additional information.

Thank you Roger. I had found the Griffiths valuations for 1856-1857 and saw Patrick Maguire there. He may well be Thomas’ Father. The shipping records for emigrants to Australia are very scant and there are many errors in ages and spelling so it’s a lot of guesswork from here. Would that record of Patrick show where his property is or was? I’m resigned to probably just photographing the areas  and any Church  building from the general area they originated. I will have the date for my arrival in the next couple of days and will fill out the form then

This site https://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/   should help you determine where Patrick Maguire's plot was located in Snugborough. There is a way to view the property as it exists today.
