Thomas Hynes and Caroline Davis

My great-grandfather Thomas Hynes married Caroline Davis in Mallow on 30th April 1864. The certificate lists his father as William Hynes, and hers as John Davis. Apart from Thomas' British army record which states that his dob was 1840, I can find no evidence of his existence either in Ireland or England which ties him to that date,or his father's name. There is a family story that his father died in an accident when Thomas was quite young, and his grandparents offered to take his mother, himself and his siblings in provided they converted to catholicism - Thomas refused, the others did not. Popular thought is that he was born in Liverpool in 1837 to Michael Hynes and Elizabeth Elliot, however I'm unconvinced due to his recorded dob on his army record as he would have had no reason tolie about his age when he joined up. I gather he had no further contact with his mother and siblings. I think this is one of those "needle in a haystack" searches, howeverif you are only able tosuggest some other options I would be most grateful. I have searched Ancestry, Find My Past, Family Search, etc to no avail.

Kind regards,

Kath

Kath,

Thomas Hynes and Caroline Davis actually married in the town of Buttevant on 30th April 1864.

Buttevant is  a 15 minute drive above Mallow, but a Mallow postal/district address

Thomas was a Corporal of the 46th Regiment of the English army at the time of his marriage to Caroline and he was living at the Buttevant Army Barracks in what is now called Barrack Street Buttevant.

The father of Caroline  (John) was an armour sergeant of the 15th Dep, so Caroline's address was also the Buttevant Barracks.

As the marriage records states that the bride mas a minor we can say that Caroline was under the age of 21 at the time of her marriage. (Probably between 18 & 20)

If both their parents were in the English army the birth/baptism records might not be listed in the normal church records as they might be recorded by the army chaplain, some army births are listed on Findmypast. But Thomas's father was a Joiner so there is a chance we find something

You mentioned you have Thomas's army record, does it mention the place of enlistment/enrollment? A place of enrollment can be a good indication what area Thomas was from in either Ireland or England

I see what I can find for you, attached a picture of the Buttevant Barracks (houses still exist)

The 1871  Hampshire UKcensus  indicates that Thomas was born in Liverpool 1840

The 1891 census shows the same and Caroline's place of birth was Toronto in Canada

Hi Anne Marie and team,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply to my request - I'm only sorry that it went into my junk email withouut me noticing until today!  Living in Australia I don't have an appreciation of your counties etc so thanks for the geography lesson and also for the photo of the barracks - such information really helps to bring our ancestors to life.  You asked if there was a place of enlistment recorded on Thomas's army record - there is, Bolton.  He also records his birth as being in the Parish of Liverpool, near the town of Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster.  His age on enlistment on 25 Feb 1859 was 19 years.  As I mentioned in my previous correspondence, I don't think he was the Thomas Hynes born in 1837, especially since he put his father's name as William on the marriage certificate.  I'm pretty sure William was an Irish catholic, and the family origins are in county Galway.  I don't know what his mother's name was, nor the names of his siblings - my brother seems to remember hearing that he had a brother and sister?  He and I have been in touch with Steve Hancock on a number of occasions, Steve having gone to the New Zealand Hynes family reunions of 1988 and 1998

If you do come across any further information pertaining to Thomas's family I would be very grateful to have it, in the meantime I'lll continue digging from across the globe!

Again, many thanks for your assistance.

Kath

Dear Kathy,

I have only just some across your post and joined Irelandxo. My husband Leigh is also related to Thomas and Caroline Hynes. Their youngest daughter Ruth Winifred Hynes was Leigh's grandmother. We would love to make contact and work out the family connection.

With kind regards

Leanne

Dear Leanne,

Thanks for gettiing in touch, I've just returned to genealogy after a couple of year's break and I'm still chasing answers to Thomas and Caroline.  Having rejoined Ancestry for the next 6 months I'm hoping to verify some of the information I have of the Hynes family.  I think I've found Caroline's baptism details in the Droin Collection.  Although she is written up as Caroline Davies, her father is recorded as John, being in the 71st regiment which fits with him being army personnel.  My grandfather was Arthur George Hynes who went to New Zealand and married Anna Katrina Curtis and my father was Terence Curtis Hynes. their 3rd child.  I'd love to keep in contact either via Ireland XO or my email address kmorony@bigpond.com.

Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Cheers,

Kath

Hi Kath,

I can't definatively link your Caroline Davis to other family members, but where there's smoke there's often fire. Your posts and very interesting replies from Anne Marie have contained many uncanny alignments with my ancestors.

I am descended from Benjamin Edward Davis. The first commonality is Buttevant, Cork. Ben joined the British army at a young age and stated on his marriage certificate he was born in Cork (between 1856 and 1864). His niece Clara Elizabeth Ann Atherley was also born in Cork c1863 at Buttevant. Her mother Elizabeth Anne Davis, born c1843, was married to Thomas Mason Atherley in Buttevant on 3 March 1862. The next coincidence is that both Elizabeth's and Ben's father was John Davis. Furthermore, Caroline Burke is the name of Ben's mother provided on his marriage certificate. The name Caroline carried down to my grandmother, Victoria Caroline Davis. Both Ben Davis and Clara McClelland (nee Atherley) emigrated to Australia.

Hope you find this interesting.

Cheers, John
