Thomas (Edward) Fitzgerald

Thomas Fitzgerald (15 or18 years?) was tried in Dublin City in March 1818 and sentenced to 7 years transportation.

The convict ship "Tyne" departed Cork 16/7/1818 carrying 180 men and arrived Port Jackson, Sydney 4/1/1819. Ships surgeon was Henry Ryan and free passengers were George and Ann Hull.

Thomas was my great great grandfather and I'm hoping to trace any of his forebears and hopefully descendants of his parents, thought to be George Fitzgerald b. 1760? at Ballycasheen, Kilkenny and mother Ellen Huggard, married at Catholic Church,  Killarney on 3/9/1799. Thomas was possibly baptised same location 12/12/1801.

My wife and I will be in Dublin from 25-28th August, 2025 and then plan to hire a car for 7 days to explore, mainly around Kildare, Maynooth areas which family lore says we descended from. Would love to hear from any family connections!

Ed,

Is this your Thomas? I believe Thomas and Mary had more children than noted.

If you have the correct parent names, this could be him. Record found on Ancestry. You probably have.

Yes! This is him, thank you Mary! Thomas and Mary had four children in Sydney, their youngest Marck, had 15 children including my grandfather. They followed the goldfields in NSW and in the 1880s became farmers and graziers west of Forbes NSW where Thomas is buried. He has hundreds of descendants across Australia and we have had some successful reunions....would love to do something similar in Ireland!

It seems you may have confirmed his parentage but i have not had access to Ancestry so would love to hear anything of his parents or extended family. We are hoping to visit relevant locations when we visit in late August and will appreciate all leads! Thank you again for your response and kind regards! Ed (Edward Fitzgerald)

Ed,

I looked on the paid site Roots Ireland, but did not find any more children for George and Ellen. They were married on 3 Sep 1799 in the RC parish of Killarney...no father's names were recorded. The witnesses were J. Connor & Timothy McCarthy. Birth records for the RC parish of Killarney began in 1785, and marriage records in 1792.

Additionally, Huggard doesn't strike me as a very common surname, so I looked at other Huggard marriages, and there is a Thomas who married in 1802, and a Samuel in 1813...both from Killarney...no telling if they are related to Ellen. Finally, Griffith's Valuation records show both a Samuel and Abraham Huggard in Killarney...maybe those forenames are in your family.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thank you so much Carolyn
