Thomas Claudis Wallace

I am in search of relatives of Thomas Claudis Wallace, b. 06 Jan 1806 on "banks of the Black Water River" in County Cork Ireland.  He emigrated to the United States around 1825 and eventually settled in eastern Iowa.

Hi Paige,

I do not find any birth records at RootsIreland.ie for a Thomas Claudius Wallace in County Cork between 1790 and 1810 (but it is possible that the records for County Cork are not complete), nor at Ancestry.com.  There is a marriage record (possibly his parents?) from 1795 for a Thomas Wallis in Mallow, which is a town on the Blackwater River.  But you would need better information to place him specifically.  My guess is that the marriage is not his parents, but impossible to know.  The Blackwater River is quite long.  The river runs through Fermoy, Mallow and Youghal in southern Cork.

From what I can see, I believe you are looking for Thomas Wallace who lived in Otter Creek, Jackson, Iowa. Am I correct?  He has quite a few children and you could possibly figure his father's name.  If you find his father's name and marriage you can find his siblings. His siblings may have more specific information about their parish or area in Cork.  Using the Irish naming convention might help.  According to family tree at FamilySearch.org, Thomas Claudius Wallace emigrated in 1846.  It is impossible to know how accurate that information is.  I believe he married in 1850.

Traditional Naming Pattern

  • First son usually named for the father's father.
  • Second son usually named for the mother's father.
  • Third son usually named for the father.
  • Fourth son usually named for the father's eldest brother.
  • Fifth son usually named for the mother's eldest brother.

There is also probate file, see below.  This document is the appointment of the Administrator, James Wallace.  If you can find the entire probate file you might be able to glean some information from it.  Iowa is a state with incredible genealogical resources, especially on the local level.

Thomas Wallace probate

Unfortunately, without a parish or townland, he is difficult to trace in Ireland.  But other records might help such as a published obituary, his land grant (did he get a land grant?) or probate documents.  Any of these documents might give a more specific place in Ireland.

Let me know if I can be of additional assistance.

Best regards,

Marsha

Hello Paige,

My name is Richard Wallace of Chicago, and Thomas Claudius Wallace is my G  Grandfather who was born in West Cork, Ireland in the village of Rathcoole, 3 miles North of Millstreet, on the banks of the Blackwater River.  I have documentation that traces Thomas back to the brother of William Wallace of Braveheart.  I have boxes of records and thousands of cousins in the mid-west.  Thomas fled Ireland after being caught fishing in the Blackwater River, adjacent to the Wallace estate in 1827.  Poaching the King's fish was severely treated in the early 1800's and he knew it would be deportation or death if the two "Peelers" who caught him if they could get him to a magistrate for sentencing.  Robert Peel, Prime Minister of UK put retiring soldiers to work in Ireland and they were known as "Peelers".  The two Peelers were faced with the situation that the Magistrate was on the opposite side of the river, so they made Thomas carry them through the river.  When Thomas had the first Peeler in the middle of the river, he drowned him, while the second Peeler came charging into the river, where he bayonetted Thomas in the leg before being killed by Thomas.  Two day later Thomas was on a private small sailboat on the way to Prince Edwards Island.  He ended up in Dubuque Iowa, and settled in Jackson County, Otter Creek, Garryowen, St. Patrick Parish, 20 miles south of Dubuque.  The James M. Wallace listed in the State of Iowa document is my grandfather.   Contact me for more.  Richard Wallace, ricoworld@ameritech.net, 312-855-1300.    Check out this link.   IrelandXO | Thomas Claudis Wallace
