Theresa McPadden b. 11 Jun 1911

LeitrimInishmagrath (Leitrim)

Greetings.

My grandmother was born to Michael McPadden 1874-1959 and Mary Horan 1870-1940 on 11 June 1911. I was able to find the family on the 1901 and 1911 census, Greanghnalogh, Inishmagrath, Co. Leitrim. However, since the census was taken in Apr 1911, my grandmother was not yet born. My grandmother emigrated to the US in 1927, having listed this information above as a home address for her father. I have searched church and civil records online and have been unable to locate her birth registry or a baptism. I am in hopes to find some guidance.

Thank you,

Jamie

Jamie:

The subscription site Roots Ireland only has Inishmagrath RC baptismal records up to 1900 so I only found the record for Martin on November 3 1898. The records for the other children are not on Roots Ireland. Roots Ireland has civil birth records for Co. Leitrim up thru 1920. I saw records for seven children: Martin 1898 Thomas 1900 John 1901 Margaret 1903 Bridget 1904 Kate 1906 and Elizabeth 1908. No record was listed for Theresa.  I searched on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and found five records under the spelling McPaden but no Theresa.

I guess there are two possibilities. The first is that the family never registered Theresa's birth with the local registrar. The other possibility is that Elizabeth is Theresa. Elizabeth was born in June. Many emigrants made themselves younger or older when they came to their new country.

You could contact the church in Inishmagrath http://www.inishmagrath.com/ ; and see if they have a 1911 baptismal record for Theresa.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Jamie:

The father Michael was a widower when he married Mary Horan. His first wife was Margaret Cullen. See fourth record at this link. Michael and Margaret were under 21 when they married. Names of the fathers are shown on the record.

Margaret died February 15 1897 of tuberculosis Age 21 See last record  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

Hello Roger,
Thank you for your prompt response. I will reach out to the church to see if they have any information. I was able to verify that Eliza and Theresa are sisters. The both emigrated to the US in 1927, though not together (May and September), and were sponsored by the same brother, Thomas.

I did also read about Margaret Horan. Their daughter Mary Bridget also emigrated to the US in 1914 and was sponsored by her uncle Michael Cullen. I suspect after her mother's passing, she was sent to live with relatives on the Cullen's side as she is not listed with the McPaddens on the 1901 nor 1911 census. However, I have not traveled down that rabbit hole yet!

Thanks again.

Jamie

Hello, I don't know what part of the world you are in but I do know a descendant who lives in New Jersey and has been researching for decades. Have you been to Drumkeerin (Greagnoglogh Townland in Lisnanerris? My family lived just down the road. There are a lot of folks on various groups with connections to about twenty families that lived on this part of the mountain and shared resources, had fights, and inter-married. Sharon
