Surname Coyne from Galway

Hello! I am finding my Irish ancesters most difficult to locate. I'm hoping someone out there might have some information or will be able to point me in the right direction.

My great-grandmother was born in Galway, about 1894. Her name was Ellen Coyne and her parents were Michaeland Mary Coyne. In 1901 she lived at 62 Loughaunbeg with her parents, grandmother, and siblings: Mary, Martin, Michael, John, James and Pat. I can't find any information on this family outside of the 1901 Census. Ellen immigratedto the United States around 1907. I have found no evidence of her family being in the United Statesbut am unable to find them in the in the 1911 Census in Galway. Michael was a farmer, born around 1859. I am also unable to find any death or grave records.

Does anyone out there have any information on this family?

Thanks so much!!

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Located the 1911 census record http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Selerna/Loughau… Record shows nine children with eight living. Five sons shown in the census so Martin, Mary and Ellen had left.

Was the maiden name of Mary also Coyne or King or Nee?? See church record transcriptions below.I'm having a tough time finding civil birth records or baptismal records. The one below is a possibility for Martin.

I saw that 1911 census but had discounted it because of the age of Michael and Mary being both about 10 years older than they should have been according to the 1901 census. The children's ages do match up though and so it seems to reason this is a match. I do not know what Mary's maiden name is but I will check out  those records. Thank you so much!!

Jonica:

You need a little history to understand the age discrepancies between 1901 and 1911.

In the 19th century, age and birthdates were not that important to people in Ireland. So ages in the 1901 census were generally understated. In 1908, the Old Age Pension Act was passed and included people in ireland. If you were 70 and had income below a defined level you were entitled to a pension. At that point age was important and people suddenly became much older which is why you might see a 20 year difference in age from 1901 to 1911 rather than 10 years.

I'm also descended from a Michael Coyne and Mary Coyne (nee Coyne) from Clifden, through their eldest son Thomas who was born in 1865.  The catch is, there were apparently TWO couples named Michael and Mary Coyne who lived in Clifden and were having children at about the same time, and I've never been able to sort out exactly which parents go with which children.  Oh well, I did the DNA thing on 23andMe and Family Tree DNA.  If you did too, maybe you could look to see if we match!

I believe eldest son Thomas born in 1865 may be my Great, Grandfather.  A Thomas Coyne from Galway (not sure where in Galway) married Catherine Burns McKenna in South Shields, England.  Thomas died in South Shields in 1933.  Family research undertaken by a grandson of Thomas suggests that he lived in Clifden.  Disappointingly the birth date for Thomas varies on Census, Marriage Certificate and Death Certificate so tough to get a specific birth date for Thomas

Does the above link in to any of your own family research

Best

Steve
