Sughrue / Sugrue

Hello Everyone,

I am searching for my Irish roots, as many others around the world are! My line was living in the United States no later than 1855 when i have records of a marriage.The indivdual I am researching is Patrick Shuckerow (spelling variation that i believe was unique to Connecticut, USA).During his life in CT the name was spelled a number of different ways including: Chuckarew, Sugrua, Sugrue, Shughru and a few others. Here are some of the details I have on his life so far :

Born between 1827-1830 (the range taken from marriage and death info)
Died April 23 1894, North Canaan CT (they dont have death record tho?)
Married Ellen Campion May 31 1855 in Salisbury CT.
Children included: Cornelius, James, Patrick, William, Michael, Julia and Ellen (may have been more?)
Said to be a native of Kenmare, Co Kerry, Ireland.

In my search for more info on Patrick I have started looking for others with the same surname in the nearby towns he lived in. I have come across the following:

Johanna:
Born 1815?, Ireland. I am starting to think this birth year is wrong!
Died May 9 1908 (oddly on death cert her birth year is 1815 also on May 9)
Also lived in Salisbury just like Patrick! She moved from Salisbury sometime after her husband died.
Married Patrick Reardon
In both her Obit and an add from a newspaper "searching for missing friends" states she had a brother name Cornelius who moved to California.
Her death certificate lists her parents as Cornelius Shuckrough and Julia Connel.

I then located Cornelius and the following information:

Cornelius: surname is Sughrue (i believe Shuckerow was unique to Connecticut, in regards to Patrick and Johanna)
Born between 1828-1829
Died May 1910.
Arrival: Obit states he left Ireland at the age of 14 so arrival between 1842-1843.
Married Mary
Obit lists him also as a native of Kenmare, Ireland.
Still trying death certificate!

The goal now is to try and tie these 3 together as siblings. A few things to take into consideration: Cornelius and Patrick both said to be natives of Kenmare. Johannas parents listed as a Cornelius and Julia which were the names of Patricks first born son / daughter. Birth of Johanna, im wondering if she was actually born that early and was actually 13 years older than her brother? Also the name spellings of Johanns parents. Im going to say her fathers is misspelled and was a form of either Sughrue or Sugrue, her mothers which on her death cert looks to be Connel may also be a misspelling? I am basically now trying to find records in Ireland that have these parents and children listed! Any help is much appreciated!

The surname in Ireland was likely Sugrue or Sughrue. The Co. Kerry church records are on a free site www.irishgenealogy.ie ; I did not find any good leads in Kenmare but did find some leads in the RC parish of Milltown which is three parishes north of Kenmare and may be a stretch for someone to say they were a native of Kenmare.  Parents were Cornelius Sughrue and Julia Cournane  See Patrick record below. There were other children listed: Mary 1828  Honor February 5, 1832 Julia 1839 Cornelius 1842  Milltown RC records start in October 1825 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0679

There are a couple anomalies. Cornelius is 1842 and you have Honor and Patrick baptized six weeks apart?

Hello Roger,

I am aware of that family in Milltown and previously copied all that inrofmation down to save as leads to follow. Did you hapen to look at the attachements i added with my orginal post? what does the surname of Johannas mother look like? I would guess Connel? I also had very little with the search based on those names! The website you mentioned is great and I have poked around on there a bit in the past trying to come up with leads. I am still trying to get a death certificate for Patrick in hopes it will mention his parents names! I was hopeful that he used family names when naming his children. I also found the marriage record for the family youve mentioned abovem between Cornelius and Julia Cournane. Anyways, i thank you for your response and hope to soon dig deeper into my ancestry!

ah it appears i forgot to attach her death certificate! I will do so in this response. As far as DNA testing i have done so and have a kit waiting for my grandfather to do as well. I have a tree with my dna attached to it on ancestry.com attached to user name mlipsie111.I also have a gedmatch kit number which is A241519.

Connel for sure.

I looked at our prior messages involving the surname Sugrue (I think there were three). This one involved another Cornelius Sugrue from Kenmare.

Great that your grandfather is taking the test and will get his data on Gedmatch. I assume you are contacting top matches and trying to make connections. The Ancestry DNA process is problematic based on my own experience. Many people test just to get an ethnicity breakout and are not interested in their family tree. Many people do not have a tree and others keep it private and finally you don;t always get replies to Ancestry messages that you send.

I went back and did a search for all records in Kerry with a Sugrue and a Connell in the same record. Found the one below in Glenflesk which is closer to Kenmare. In general, an immigrant would say he/she was from the nearest big town/village rather than his/her townland.

Roger,

Crohane was the fathers name tho? It appears that will be a mystery! Its unfortunate that more results didnt show up! I wonder if i can find any more information on this John....

I noticed Crohane but I figured it was a possible lead. Barraduff is in Aghadoe civil parish and the Sugrues were not in the 1852 Griffiths for the parish and may have emigrated, moved, or died off.
