Stuart of Castlestuart

Hello

My great grandfather is Andrew Godfrey William STUART, 1869 - 1949. He was born and died in New Zealand.

My g g grandfather is Andrew Godfrey STUART, 1841 - 1911. He was born in Melbourne, lived in Tasmania but came to New Zealand after his marriage to Rosa WILSON. This A G STUART's parents are Andrew Thomas STUART and Mary GILMOUR. They came out to Australia from Ireland, landed in Port Phillip (Melbourne) and shortly after A G STUART's birth went to Tasmania.

My great grandmother used to say that her husband, A G W STUART, received a remission payment however is was not large enough to support him, her and their four children.

Can any one tell me why A G W STUART would have received a remission? Is it some how passed down the family as a form of inheritance? Is there any way to find out, however I would need to do this via the internet as I live in New Zealand.

Thanks, Rose

foggy kiwi,

The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase & Fable defines a remittance man as follows:

“An emigrant supported or assisted by payments of money from home; typically a disgraced man of good position or family who has been sent abroad by his family and whose payments depend on his remaining there”.

If that’s the reason your ancestor emigrated, I am not sure that the family are likely to have published the reasons. No harm in searching local newspapers though around the time he left in case it made it into the papers.

Hi Mary

Thank you for the information you have given me. I particularly like the Facts for Kids.

I still find it curious that Andrew Godfrey William STUART would have received a remittance as he is the great great grandson of Andrew Thomas STUART, who

came from Ireland to Australia and Tasmania. Perhaps this is going to be a family mystery that we won't ever know why.

Mary GILMOUR, A T STUART's wife, is also a bit of mystery. But this makes family all the more interesting.

I appreciate your reply, Rose.
