Staunton and Kirke Families

I am looking for information on the family and the descendants of John Staunton and Mary Kirke. They married in 1836. My great grandmother, Ellen b 1837, was one of their children. Her baptismal sponsors were James Hartnette and Mary Brien. The priest was listed as M Power E.

John and Mary were also parents to Richard b. 1840, sponsors - William Bouzane and Frances Stack;

Margaret b 1843, sponsors - Charles Daly and Ellen Walsh;

and David b. 1846, sponsors - Michael Kirk and Catherine Daly

Ellenemigrated to Springfield / Chicopee, Massachusetts. I don't know what happened to her parents and siblings and even the townland in which they lived. If you have any information about anyone listed above, I would be most appreciative.

Thank you so much,

Robin Burns Hutchins

Ballymacoda is in Kilmacdonogh civil parish and Ladys Bridge is in Ightermurragh civil parish. Both parishes are in East Cork near the border with Co. Waterford.

I looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation Head of Household listing for both parishes. There is a John Staunton in each parish but only Kilmacdonogh has Kirk entries so I'm guessing that is the correct parish. This assumes that John was still alive in 1852 and leasing land. If he was deceased then maybe the Mary listed in Kilmacdonogh is correct.

Let me know if you have any questions.

The town of Ballymacoda is in Kilmacdonagh civil parish and Griffith's Valuation took place in this area in 1853, and one John Staunton showing up on this parish. He is listed in Curragheen/Curraheen townland, and the occupier of a house and just over 10 acres of land, leased from a 'Lord Ponsonby'. A good possibilty for your John...  and there are several other Stauntons in the same townland that might be related.

Curragheen/Curraheen townland consists of about 190 acres, and is located about 5km (c 3 miles) to the North West of the town of Ballymacoda - see Ballymacoda to Curraheen (google map)

You can access Griffith's Valuation on the AskAboutIreland website just enter surname Staunton, select Co. Cork and narrow the search to Kilmacdonagh civil parish.

The townland of Curragheen on the 1st Edition OSI maps (c1840), and some details of the area from Lewis Topographical Directory of 1837 (Kilmacdonagh)

The townland is shown on the Tithe records as 'Curriheen', and dated abt 1837 for this area, includes several Staunton listings.

edit : just spotted that Roger posted similar details, so overlapping slightly... but at least came up with the same result...

Hi Robin
There are 140 Stauntons in Griffiths Valuation (free site) in Cork in 1851 but neither of the parish names you mention are in the parish list!
There are 9 in the 1901 census & 23 in the 1911 (both free online) but no Richard or David
There are 3 Staunton listings in the irish phone book - 3 businesses and a dr.
I couldn't find a death/burial record for either John or Mary.
I notice your tree on ancestry doesn't have John's birth record exactly so here it is:

Hi, Roger,

Thank you for this information.  I am confused, although, as I found Stantons, Kirks/Quirks, and the childrens' sponsors names in both the Parish of Garryvoe and in the townlands of  Rathhaha and Garryvoe and Parish of Kilmacdonogh, townland Curragheen, Yellowford, Glenawilling, Gortcorcoran and so forth.  How does one decide who is the correct family? This is my biggest stumbling block.

Thanks, Shane,

I hope you saw my replies to Roger and Col.  I'm still confused as there are too many John Stauntons in the area at the same time.  How do I figure out which on is my ancestor when each parish lists people with the same surnames and even the sponsors have the same last names in the parishes!

Robin:

All three civil parishes-- Kilmacdonogh, Garryvoe and Ightermurragh relate to the RC parish of Ballymacoda and Ladys Bridge and all three have a John Staunton listed for the Griffiths.  So at this point we can't ( unless my colleagues have ideas) conclusively pinpoint the correct townland/civil parish. I lean heavily on the presence of Kirks in Kilmacdonogh and none that I can see in the other two parishes.

On the other hand, William Bouzane was listed as William Boozan in the Garryvoe Griffiths

The 1901 census did not yield any real clues although I found a Richard Stanton in Ightermurragh parish. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Ightermurragh/Rat…

It is getting late here. Let me get back to you tomorrow unless Shane or Col come up with an answer.

Hi, again, Col, Roger, Shane, and Frances,

You are fantastic researchers and I appreciate all your comments and suggestions.  I will follow up on all these leads.  What a wonderful service you are doing for those of us relatively new to Irish genealogy and lost in the geography and surnames of Cork.  Thank you!

My best wishes to you all,

Robin

Dear Roberta,

I would advise you to keep trying and not to give up.

The names of walsh, daly, beausang, stack and o brien etc were all well known names to the area going back a very longtime

The parish place names are all very close together and so are the churches and cemeteries/graveyards.

if you go into the Ballymacoda/Ladysbridge Cummunity facebook page they have a heritage group that might be able to help you further.

The have a few hsitorians in the area as well that no doubt will have the information you need.

It is great to see that people were and are willing to help
