Smyth of Antrim

Hi I am Researching the family of my Mother and have got back to my 3x ggrabdparents, James Smyth 1796 - 1861 and Martha Gray 1788 - 1868. They lived in Mullans, Finvoy, Antrim and had 6 children, Jonathan, James, Samuel, William Alexander and Hannah. I have been able to trace the lives of Jonathan who went to USA and Samuel, my 2x ggf, but know nothing of the others other than Hannah died in 1848 and is buried with her father. I am researching from Australia so cannot vist locations personnely and would appreciate any help that may be given

Cheers

Thank you Mary. I have seen some of those results in Ancestry but for various reasons had my doubts about them. I have seen some very bad research in other peoples trees and do not have a lot of trust in them. I was hoping that someone related might see my plea and be able to help. Thank you for your trouble.

James Smyth left a will dated 19th Feb 1860. You can view it free on the PRONI wills site.

The will mentions his wife Martha, his son Jonathan, son Samuel, Samuel's son James Smyth, a son James in America, £5 was to go to that James' eldest living child, son William who was living in Roseyards (a townland not far from Mullans) and son Alexander. Alexander's whereabouts are not given but from his inheritance I would say he was clearly living in the area at that date.

This probate abstract may relate to James' son William in Roseyards:

Letters of Administration of the personal estate of William Smyth late of Roseyards County Antrim Farmer who died 9 March 1888 at same place were granted at Belfast to Matilda Smyth of Roseyards the Widow.

Letters of administration means he died intestate, so no will. His estate would have been disposed of in accordance with intestacy law (ie to closest relatives).
