Simpsons in Mohill, Co Leitrim
I have 4 generations of James Simpson ancestors , all protestant, 3 of whom were born in Co Leitrim // The 3rd James Simpson was b 1841 (family bible), m Jane P Edmonds in Tully Co Longford (mC), migrated to NZ. All 12 children, including the 4th James, were born there. // The 2nd James Simpson was b 1803 (suggested by his dC), married Mary Sherritt in Corboghil (dC says her folks were James & Mary). Children, in order, were Wensley, Francis, Anne, James, Catherine, Elizabeth, George. Emigrated to NZ in 1865 with most of his children (Ann stayed). He was listed in Griffith's valuation as occupying land in Corboghil, Co Leitrim, in 1857 as James Jun. // So his father must also have been James Simpson (the 1st) but I can find very little else in the records about that 1st James. James 1st's dad may have been William. There are some Simpsons in the churchyard of the protestant church, St Mary's, in nearby Mohill, Co Leitrim. There were wealthy land-owner Simpsons in nearby Drumsna but we can find no connection. I have searched Family Search (records & full-text), Ancestry, My Heritage, Find My Past. I have yet to find any online source of the parish records. Any suggestions of how I might find out more about the 1st James please? And is there any way of finding out how a family with this Scots-sounding surname ended up in Leitrim? My sister is planning a visit next year and will do a bit of research while there.
