Simon Healy, born 1795, and daughter Ellen born 1830-31

Hello, I am trying to find any family info on Simon Healy and his daughter Ellen Healy Hassock Ainsley. He was a mariner and my 3xGGF. The collection on Find My Past ofBritain, merchant seamen, 1835-1857has voyages listed for Simon Healey marinerno. 7472,beginning in June 1836 on the ship George out of Cork. Age 40seems late to start a life at sea. His daughter Ellen was born in Cork (no idea where) about 1830. I found her age 10 in the 1841 UK census in Kent with Dennis Healy (coast guard) + wife Ellen and family, and in 1851 with Dennis Healey and familyin Hartlepool on William St. That's how I know it's the "right" Healey/Healy/Heley family because William St is a constant through to 1881. My GGmother was also born there in 1861.
Other Healy childrenare Catherine, Mary,Michael and John, all born between 1818-28 in Ireland. Perhaps Dennis is really Simon??On my GG-grandmotherEllen's marriage certificate in 1866 to second husband John Ainsley, her father is listed as Simon Heley. Her first marriage was to mariner John Samuel Hassock from King's Lynn Norfolk about 1851 but I haven't located thatcertificate. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate you pointing me in the right direction for the Irish connections. Many Thanks. DM

Hello DM, firstly I imagine he went to sea earlier but is only recorded when he became a master mariner or first mate unless he was jusk a deckhand but I doubt they recorded everyone on board but maybe they did even then.

There are a lot of Ellen Healys born in Cork circa 1830 but none with a father SImon, however around that time there are two births ot a Simon Healy and Haily (same person) and a Catherine Carty in Castletownroche in County Cork about 20 miles north of Cork city, I looked at the site Roots Ireland which is a subscription site. However there is a free site here with Cork church records and you can see all of them, the two I found to Simon were a Bridget and a Daniel, only see two to that pairing.

There is an Ellen Haly born to a Denis Haly and a Catherine Burke and they had another child a Michael born in 1838 and that is all I see to 1845.

There are 2 Denis Healy born in Cork city in about 1797 and 1799 but no way of knowing as a marriage of this Denis may not give his parents names etc Here is the free site and click on Church records and Cork area as it appears to have more than the subscription site, https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/  civil records for all only commencein 1864 and 1845 for Protestant marriages, ohterwise you are dependent on church records and the ones I found were all RC. You are at the outer regions of Irish records here as you only have church records and htey are patchy but Cork appear fairly good but the inability to find a marriage for the Simon menitoned indicates the records are missing or lost if they existed, the laws at the time frowned on RC marriages.

Good Luck

Hello Pat,
I have a bit more information now. In Cork and Ross, Passage West, there is a baptism record for Ellen Haly 18 Jun 1829 daughter of Simon Haly and Mary Finn. Would you be able to verify record of a marriage for Simon and Mary in May 1828 or so? I couldn't find one. Yet. There may also be children William B Healy born/baptised 29 Mar 1833 in Cork, and Simon Michael Healy born 1841 in Cobh. Simon Healy the merchant mariner father spent 11 days in Dec 1836 in the mariner's hospital in London. At that point he had been a seaman for 21 years. Really hoping these strands are all connected for real and that someone (besides me!) hasn't woven them together in error.  Perhaps the Dennis Healey et al group are collateral ancestors and not direct ones...

Thanks, DM

HI DM, there is a marriage on the 6th May 1828 in Passage West to suit on Ancestry, surprisingly not on Roots Ireland. THere are a number of children too to the marriage, but searched 1833 plus or minus 5 I think, some are returned under the name Holy but was searching Haly so a variant, mother was Finn. This is more likely to be a mariner as they live in a place associated with the sea, it is on the other side to Cobh (Cove) fromerly Queenstown if searching pre 1921. The children I see are Ellen 18 June 1829; Willliam 31 March 1833; James 30 Nov 1827; Catherine 13 June 1835 and Anne born 16th Nov 1830. There may be more. You should be able to read the registers for free here but they are only searchable by date, year and month and some can be a tricky read; https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0088

I would look at the gaps between children here as if he were away deep sea it is likely the trips would be measured in years, whereas he may have plied on the coast only, ie Ireland; England and near continent etc was he in the merchant or Royal Navy etc

There are a few Simon Haly about, I was surprised as I would have thought Simon was not too common a name but thats genealogy never make assumptions.

Good Luck

Thank you!!  The forename Simon does help to limit things but truly not as much as I hoped. The follow up is never ending for sure  :)
