Sheerins from Burt

DonegalBurt (Donegal)

My ggg Grandfather died aged 58 in 1887 born circa 1829 in Burt Donegal - his name was John Sheerin. I believe he may have had siblings called James peter William... he had children called James John hugh William Ellen Mary Anne Elizabeth and Margaret. John Sheerin married Mary ferry from fahan before 1856 - first child was James 1856. I have no marriage records.Any information on the sheerins from burt will be much appreciated even if just general info or advice.

Thanks

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Baptismal records for Burt/Fahan parish do not begin until November 1859. Marriage records start in 1850. I searched on Roots Ireland and did not locate the marriage record or baptismal records for children. You mention that the first child was born in 1856. Did John and Mary have any children born 1864 or later when civil registration started?

I did look at the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Burt civil parish and there were six Sheerins listed including a John in Mulleny townland. Also, a James and Peter.

The 1901 census only showed one Sheeran in Mulleny possibly the widow of John?  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Burt/Mulleny/1…

Hi roger

Thankyou for your reply . Sorry I didn’t mention but John and Mary moved to killea and then balloughry town on the outskirts of Derry or vice verca , I’ve got all of their children’s birth records all christened in long tower church Derry  , I do believe that since Mary was frm fahan and John was frm Burt that they must have been married in this location but I cannot find any records of their marriage which I believe would’ve been after 1850.

Thanks

Dear John,

There are still Sheerins living in the area. I research local families and their connections. Did John have any children locally do you know or were they all born after they left the area? I had a search and I am unable to find their marriage but will check to see if I can find any related marriages for them

I have done extensive research in the Parish Register for Burt especially the townlands Bohullion, Deer Park, Toulett, Speenoge, and Carrowen and the name Sheerin crops up frequently as witnesses to weddings and christenings. This area is just over the Donegal border with Derry and records used to be held in Derry but are now with Donegal Genealogy office. In Ancestry you can get access to the actual Parish record book and plough through it. It certainly has dates from early 1860's. Another good source of information is Dog Licences and Petty Crime books also available on Ancestry and sometimes family names crop up in either cases as witnesses or defendents etc. Cross referencing dates and addresses sometimes yields pearls of wisdom.
