Seeking information on John Delaney and Mary Walsh

KilkennyKilmadum (Kilkenny)

Hello everyone!  I am here to see if i can learn any more information about my ancestors, John Delaney and Mary Walsh.  They are my great-great-grandparents.  Many years ago, my father did a lot of genealogical research.  I have a poor copy of John Delaney's death certificate which states he was born in County Kilkenny c.1835.  His parents are listed as William and Hanora/Honora.  John emigrated to the US c. 1860 (possibly 1862) and died in Sylvan Lake, NY of a fractured neck in Daniel David Delaney's mine on 16 Apr 1894. John Delaney and Mary Walsh were possibly married in Ireland c.1860 before emigrating. Mary's parents were John and Margaret Walsh. Mary was born c. 1840.

My father passed away 15 years ago, and it's difficult for me to sift through all his geneology records, but he suspected or assumed (or knew from some source unclear to me), that John Delaney came from Kilmadum Parish.  This could be an assumption based on an unknown family link to Daniel David Delaney.  My father's aunt Alice (b. 1895) had once recounted memories of attending family picnics at Sylvan Lake Beach.

Of all my Irish ancestors, John Delaney is the only one with a known link to a specific county in Ireland.  Hopefully, this small piece of information will help lead to more.  I would love to learn anything about John or Mary, or of John's possible familial link to Daniel David Delaney.

Thank you for reading!

With great appreciation,

Karen in Vermont, US

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and only located one baptismal record (see below) that was around 1835 and had the correct parents names. Lisdowney RC parish is to the west of Muckalee RC parish which would be the parish for someone living in Kilmadum civil parish. Not sure if this record is for your John Delaney. I also searched for Mary Walsh baptismal records around 1840 with the parents names you provided and there were too many possibilities. It would really help if you could locate the maiden name of either mother. I did not find a marriage record for John Delaney and Mary Walsh.

I did check the 1849 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilmadum civil parish and there were seven Delaney records inclusing a Daniel and a William. The Daniel may not be the same person who had a mine in New York State.

Let me know if you have any questions or have additional information.

Roger, I am very grateful for your time in finding this baptismal record.  It's very interesting.  John Delaney's birth year would be estimated as 1833, possibly 1832, because his death certificate reports his age as 61 when he died in April 1894.  Perhaps this was somehow reported inaccurately?

I do not know either of the mothers' maiden names.  I will need to check my father's original genealogical research and see if i can find more information.

I think the William Delaney record from 1849 could be a possibility for John's father.  I'm not familiar with Griffiths Valuation.  Do those records provide any further information about the family members?   The Daniel Delaney who started the mine in New York state was born in 1802. I don't know when he emigrated. He could possibly be an uncle to John Delaney or a more distant relative.

Oh how i wish i had time to delve into this!!

Thank you again for your kind help.

Many immigrants from Ireland made themselves youunger or older to fit their circumstances. A 16 year old may have made themselves 2 years older to get a job opportunity. Someone 25 may have made themselves four years younger for a job opportunity.

The Griffiths was a land survey for tax purposes.Only the head of household was listed along with the amount of acreage they were leasing.

Hi Karen, can you contact me? I have some information. Those people are my ancestors too. Email me carrie2275us@yahoo.com or call 8457622765. I hope you see this! You did not see my previous msg. By the way, John Delaney didn't die in Daniel Delaney's Mine that I know of; per the newspaper article, he died in "Bunker Hill Quarry" in Wappingers Falls, NY, which is about 20 minutes from Sylvan Lake. I live near Sylvan lake and visit the cemetery and do tons of research. I believe John is buried with his son Richard.
