Seeking Guckian Family Annaghkeenty Leitrim

Good Day

I am actively seeking information and connection with my Guckian Family. My Great Grandfather Patrick Guckian was born in Leitrim County in the late 1870's. There is some info and snipers of info from family that mentions Annaghkeenty Parish as well as the family name of my GG Grandmother, McNama.

My G Grandfather Patrick worked in Harrogate, England where he met and married my G Grandmother, Bridget. The couple then set sail for North America settling in Toronto, Canada. TheIrish Canadian family has grown to over 150 relatives and we are very eager to connect and meet our Irish family.

I have travelled to Ireland and enjoyed ourselves tremendously, including a visit to the Genealogy Library but we're not successful in locating information on Patrick's family. I also registered for the "Gathering" project and connected with Leitrim Genealogy where I received a small bit of info on Patrick and for another 60 Euro's I could receive additional info on 1 sibling of many.

I continue to seek information, most recently my Great Grandparents Marriage Record.

If you are a Guckian, or know of any Guckian please send me a note. I have been researching my Irish family for well over 20years and am eager to connect.

We are very excited to connect with our Ancestrial family.

On behalf of my Irish Canadian family, until we connect.

Bridget

Patrick married Bridget Butterly in Knaresborough Apr – Jan 1907, Volume 9a, page 223. (This is repeated on the post for Bridget). You can order a copy of the certificate for £9.25 from this site:

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

If you get his father’s name from that certificate, it may be possible to trace him in Ireland. He doesn’t appear to be in the English census in 1901 so hopefully he was in Ireland.  There’s about 15 Patrick Guckians in the census. May be possible to narrow that with a father’s name.

Bridget:

Below is the 1876 civil birth record for Patrick. In addition to the Thomas 1880 record that Gerlish found there was also a John in 1877 (below). No RC church records. However, the online Kiltubrid RC parish register stops in 1874 for baptisms so I'm wondering if Roots Ireland (which was the source of the civil records that I located) also does not have Kiltubrid records past 1874. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0173

Hello Bridget

I have just read your post today.  We are possibly related.  I am a Guckian and my G grandma was Mary MacNama from County Leitrim. Im not sure of her birthplace but she did eventually live and possibly died in Derrien. Aghacashel in the parish of Kiltubrid.  This was the address of my grandparents where I know Mary lived as an old lady. She married a Guckian and in turn her daughter (Bridget, my grandma) married a Guckian so its a bit confusing at first.  Its a while since I looked at my genealogy information but I will check out what I have and get back to you.

Best wishes

Good Afternoon Elwyn, Gerlish and Roger

Thank you so very kindly for all your assistance, I am beyond excited about connecting, verifying my records and being given the opportunity to find my Irish roots.

I would like to apologize for my earlier posts as they were composed on my new tablet and some sentences and information was omitted; I am now on my laptop.

To verify some details from my records;

  • I recently received a copy of Bridget (Butterly) & Patrick Guckian’s marriage record in Knaresborough.
  • William Guckian is listed as a Father & Farmer on Patrick’s marriage record and James Guckian as his Witness
  • I have a Leitrim Genealogy letter (2005) assisting me in narrowing down Patrick and his family a.k.a. McGuckian and Hackett eventually narrowed down to Guckian. The letter included a record listing Patrick’s date of birth as March 5, 1876. This seems the closest as the family thought he was born on St.Patrick’s day and he wasn’t the type to say anything different.
  • The same letter listed a brother named William born 1884 as well as other children born between 1877 and 1890. Also listed is Patrick’s mother Mary McNama and Annaghkeenty, Kiltubrid parish.

I have received replies that may raise a question or just a spelling difference with Patrick’s Mother listed as Mary McNama, Mary MacNama and possibly Mary McNamara or MacNamara. Family stories have been told by different members utilizing all versions of Mary’s surname.

I’m now going through all my records (the family has no known original records) and trying to determine what really links me to the Guckian family I’m following. It is told that both Bridget & Patrick never said much about their families, although I have identified the Butterly family I located as definitely my family.

I am also now uncertain which family to follow: McNama ~  MacNama ~ McNamara ~ MacNamara

I have 1 thing that lines up – the math! My Grandfather (via adoption) passed away on February 22, 1958 with his death record listing his age as 82. I also see his age listed on his marriage record as 31 in 1907 (possibly).

If I follow the Guckian family listing Patrick’s birth as 05-March-1876 – 1876+31=1907 & 1876+82=1958.

Can you assist me with this problem? I assume the area they lived in was fairly small which could indicate recording differences in Mary’s last name, rather than numerous families with similar spellings?

I’m also hoping to connect MegG, who responded to my post with a link to Bridget Guckian who will be my first link to a living Guckian relative.

Thank you for all your assistance in helping me connect my Irish roots. This is very exciting.

Sincerely

Bridget

Search all the spellings. The spelling of the surname will vary. The idea of a single correct spelling is very much a 20th century concept to meet the needs of modern officialdom. Nobody bothered in the 1800s, especially if you could barely read or write, and the spelling then was often down to the whim of the official recording the information. But even with literate people you’ll often see it vary.  In Irish, the spelling of a surname often varies according to the sex of the individual and the case or context that it is being used in, and so for example in the genitive case you add an extra “I” to most names. The O and Mc/Mac prefixes are also completely detachable, and can also be replaced by Mhic, Nic or Ni for women. And so on.

The ages won’t add up either. In general, people in Ireland in the 1800s didn’t celebrate birthdays, didn’t have birth certificates or passports (though they might sometimes have had a baptismal cert) and often had little accurate idea of their ages. Most ages on official documents were just a guess. Ages on death certificates are little more than the informants best guess and can often be out by up to 10 years.

Hi Bridget

You have had some interesting replies to your post.

If we can decide that we are the same family I may be able to put a few bits into your jigsaw.

Much of my information is, like yours, family snippets.  Sadly the ones who knew the most have all passed away now.  I have a scribbled note that I made from information I gathered from my aunt while visiting her in Ireland possibly 25 years ago.

I have my great grandmother Mary MacNama married to William Guckian

Children - William, went to Canada but returned,   never married

Joseph married Bridget McHugh. They had 6 children

Bridget married Terence Guckian (my grandparents) They had 6 children

Patrick married ? Butler (whch is possibly your family) My note is so bad I can't decide if they had 2 or 12 children

2 children died from diphtheria.  However the 1911 Census states Mary had 7 children but only 4 living.

If we are related its amazing that Patrick should come to Harrogate. Its about 80 miles from where my father settled after leaving Ireland and Guckian is a very unusual name in these parts.

I am currently trawling through the Catholic Parish Records for Ireland to see if I can find a marriage cert  for Mary and William.

Please get back to me if any of this seems relevant.  I do have a few certificates etc.

Regards

Good Morning Meg

Thank you so much for replying, I have just located it today.

Reading through Elwyn's last post adds new details regarding the different spellings, ages etc.

While writing my post, and looking at all the bits of information I had, I believe I am confident to move forward with the Guckian Family I have been following.

My Great Great Grandparents then appear to be William Guckian and Mary McNama married around 1873 ; detail located in the extended 1911 Census information listed as married for 38 years as well as the number of surviving children.

My Great Grandparents; Patrick Guckian, married Bridget Butterly of Ballynegrena, County Louth. They married, as far as I can tell in 1907 in St. Roberts Roman Catholic Church Harrogate, Knaresborough, York. Their witnesses were James Guckian and Rose Butterly.

The information I received from Leitrim Genealogy listed Patrick’s sibling as William, born in 1877. As well my mother’s story tells of Patrick and his brother‘s destination being San Francisco, United States; with the 1906 earthquake they then settled in Toronto. If we are reading the dates correctly this would make sense as Bridget would have been with child at the time and travelling that great distance would have been difficult.

In 1907 my Grandmother was born Mary Catherine Hackett in Toronto, Canada and 7 other children were born and survived. My Mother was then born to Mary in 1932, the family then adopted my mother and they became 9 children. We are all connected in the family today accept 1 brother whom I am actively search for in Quebec.

We have no information, details or stories to tell of the name change to Hackett. We do not know where the name Hackett came from specifically but my Mother mentions thinking it was someone Patrick worked for before he married.

I have the address where Patrick lived/worked/met and married Bridget in Harrogate in 1907 at the age of 31. He is listed in the 1901 Irish Census as 25 living with his family in County Leitrim.

Meg, this is super exciting! I have finally connected with living relatives and am hoping you have come to the same conclusion. Do you have any information about William & Mary’s parents and siblings? Also, do you have a connection with our relatives in Ireland?

Thank you again MegG, I’m really hoping we have both come to the same conclusion.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Bridget

My mother is from County Lietrim.  I believe she was born in Aughnasheelin in 1924 and lived near Ballinamore.  Her parents names were Patrick and Elizabeth (O'Donnell)  Guckian.  I am interested in finding out more information about her family.

Patrick Guckian married Elizabeth O’Donnell on 5.7.1915 at Ballinamore RC chapel. His townland was Boggaun and hers Meenahill.

This looks to be Patrick in 1901 & 1911:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Leitrim/Creaghglass/Boggaun/646369/

Patrick’s parents appear to have been John Guckian and Margaret Skinnen whose marriage was registered in Mohill 1872 Vol 8, page 243.

Patrick was born 21.2.1879 at Boggaun.

Hello, I am reseraching an ancestor Catherine Hacker (Toronto) but recently learned her name was Catherine Guckian or Guikian.  Born about 1820 in Leitrim.  She married Michael McManus/MacManus February 1842 in Kiloghert   They had a son Patrick b Sept 1854 who moved to Toronto, Canada, as did his sister Catherine McManus who married Michael Dempsey.  Apparently another of Catherine and Michaels children remained in Ireland living in the homestead until death at age 90.  all together Michael and Catherine had 5 children.  I would appreciate any help.  Not sure if connected to the family everyone else is researching.  Thanks
